Stand and Canopy Trim

I'm in the process of designing a stand and canopy for a new 50g tank (36x18x19). I'm having a difficult time locating trim or moulding for both the stand and canopy. What I wanted was the trim on both pieces to be identical in profile but different widths. For instance, if the trim around the top and bottom of the stand was 3" wide, I would want a matching trim around the canopy to be 1.5" or 2" wide. I don't own a router so I can't custom make the trim. I've looked at Home Depot as well as my local lumber stores and there really isn't anything that matches what I want. As far as the trim around the top and bottom of the stand, I wanted that profile to be sqaure (flat) on the bottom because I want to put a piece of vertical fluted moulding at each edge. If you went to the following site, I'm trying to duplicate that stand.

http://www.all-glass.com/products/st...es_cherry.html

Those of you who have built your own stands and canopy, can you offer any suggestions or share what you did. My aquarium will be in the family room, so it's got to look nice.

Thanks

I hate to tell you that without a router I realy dont know how to make it match unless you get something likt basboard trim and saw it narrower for the top. On all of the stands we have made we just routed some 1X3's for the trim aound the stand. Here is a link to my stand, canopy, and sump for my 80g.

My 80g project

Maybe you could find a friend with a router to help.

MojosReef:

Thanks for the link to your 80g stand. From the construction pictures, it looks like the frame or "skeleton" if you will, is made of 1x material and you wrapped the whole thing in a birch plywood "shell" then added the trim. If your photos are in sequence, did you build the birch "shell" first using pocket screws and then slip the 1x skeleton inside it? For my 50g, I was going to construct the "skeleton" out of 2x4's and wrap it with oak. Looking at your 80g which is another 240lbs of just water, I'm thinking maybe 2x4's is overkill. Obviously yours is structurally sound since you're using it. Do you think 2x4's is overkill?

Thanks

The photos are insequence. I built the birch plywood box with the pocket screws and glued all edges with water proof glue. I then added the 1x4's to the inside or added strength. I really did build a skelleton I just put the pieces in 1 at a time and screwed them to the plywood in both directions just to add support. The tank itself actuually sits on the plywood so all of the weight is in effect trying to compress the plywood which is impossible with the amount of weight it has. I think 2X4's is a little overkill but if it makes you feel better then go for it. I just couldnt give up that much room. I have run out of room under my stand now. My C02 bottle wont even fit under it. Hope this helps explain it a little better.

I have one more question if you don't mind. The front (and back for that matter) of your birch plywood box, is that made from a solid piece of birch with openings cut out? It looks that way. How did you cut the openings? Did you use a jigsaw or circular saw? I was going to use individual pieces of oak 1x material to constuct my face frame. Your way is better, no seams. Thanks for the ideas you've given me.

The front of my stand was made out of 1 piece of birch. I cut the holes with a cicular saw and stoped short of the corners and then used a jig saw to cut the courners. The center was cut out using a scroll saw so it would have a very tiny seam then it was attatched to a 1x4 so it could be removed. It has already proved to be with its weight in gold to have it removabe. The back was cut out the same except it was made out of regular 3/4 plywood since you wont see the face anyway. All of the seams were sealed and painted with epoxy paint. Also has proved its merit. Had a little problem once and it held all of the leaked water. NOT all over the floor.
As you can see from this pic the center brace is not there.

Here if you look you can see the 1x4 attatched to the back of the center brace and it over laps the top and bottem of the face of the stand and screwed in from the back. All I have to do is remove 4 screws and out it comes. Works great.

you can get the pieces custom made to what you want at a cabinet shop or a millwork shop.

newsalt, I don't know if this will help you out, but here is a link to My Stand and Hood Project . Talk about overkill - look what we used for the frame. We finished it with Maple. Ours is also in the family room, so I wanted it to look like a piece of furniture that went with the rest of the house. As far as trim pieces, I would follow Probuilders advice and call around to cabinet makers, or your local wood working store.

you can never make some to strong. I have my stand built for a 75 gallon and it is made of complete 2x4 framing and oak plywood exterior. I also have mine built to except a 120 gallon tank.
