Interesting way of recouping the tank.

well, i just placed the acrylic sheet in there and glued the crap outta it. the glue is aquarium sealant, and it does mention that it bonds glass. acrylic to glass, im not sure. one thing that is working in my favor is that the pressure of the water will actually strengthen the seal because it will be pressing the acrylic sheet agains the black plastic aquarium frame. since this is on the inside of teh lip of the frame, the frame is adding additional support. this is the only reason i think i have a fighting chance of this thing working where others have failed.

its been a few hours and not a single drop has leaked. i have papertowels around it and they dont show any signs of water. im gonna let it sit for most of the day and if it seems to be working, then ill attempt to plumb it and hook it up!

OMG! I would be so paranoid about the glass breaking from sitting like that!

Cool shape and ingenuity though I think that you're right, you have physics working on your side with the way that acrylic panel is held in place...

Re: a crazy mans aquarium mod...

UPDATE!

i got the whole thing hooked up and circulating! YAY! now for a weird little... thingy that happens.

I think the drain on the tank is creating a siphon, not a drain. The water level of the tank raises, covers the drain completely, and the siphon is created, thus it drains faster. the speed up in drainage causes the water level to lower, breaking the siphon and making a ton of slurping noises. Then the water level raises again, and cycles over and over again.

so if this is the case, then i should just put a breathing tube into the drain somewhere right? this is the actual drain...

think i should replace that 1inch tee fitting with a 1inch 4 way fitting and put a tube straight up past water level so that it can breath?

so i feel like a mad scientist about now. im also getting nervous because i will be out of town this weekend...

Re: a crazy mans aquarium mod...

I would start with water changes to bring down the ammonia. You did add some extra bio-load with the new lions. That could be causing the spike. That is a pretty big spike though. I would definiately keep an eye on it and start changing water until it is much lower.

Re: a crazy mans aquarium mod...

you are right about the siphon, if you can put a T'ee fitting instead of the 90's you can avoid that, or a air line tapped in the 90's would do it too

I think you should move that power strip to a safer location asap

Re: a crazy mans aquarium mod...

Can you mount that power strip on the wall somewhere above the tank?
