Sump Question

I have access to all the lexan I need (free). I have a machine shop that will cut it for me. Should I just buy a 10gal tank and make it into a sump or try to customized one from scratch?? This way I could make a 15-20gal that would fit under my 55gal and copy some of the nice ones that I've seen on here. I'm pretty handy with tools but I was wondering if it's worth the aggrevation and worrying about leaks.

Re: Sump Question

Per Billyr98, it is easy to do with the right tools.

He is making a custom kalkwasser reservoir for me. He made his awesome frag tank ; look in the DIY forum.

Re: Sump Question

Free Lexan!?! build away! Just make sure a glue such as weld-on 4 and 16 is applicable with lexan (stonger then plexi). No Worries about leaks ... the glue will actually weld the 2 pieces together, as in melt them to make one!!

Re: Sump Question

My son has already odered the Weldon #4 and #16. I just need to get hold of a few pair of large clamps. I'm checking out all the neat sites with various designs. I might upgrade my skimmer at the same time

Re: Sump Question

Great, just double check to make sure that the weld-on products "melt" lexan like they do acrylic. I'm sure it will but want to be positive. Also, take a test piece and see if you can use a router on it. Build it with overhangs then use a flush trim bit and buzz it perfect!

Re: Sump Question

Here's my latest design. I think this is what you guys meant. I still have the return coming from the sump rather than the fuge because I'm more concerned with water clarity than the micro fauna. Does this make sense ??
I posted the picture but I'm not sure how to get it here.

Re: Sump Question

I saw your new design. Much better. You may want to add one more T and run another line that dumps water right back into your return section. One question why are you plumbing the fuge return all the way back to the intake section instead of just dumping it back down into the return section?

Re: Sump Question

Do you mean a T off of the input line to the return section ?? I figured the fuge should dump into the skimmer section to cut down ont he bubbles being returned to the tank. Isn't that why the baffles are there ?

I appreiciate all your help

No it would be a second T on the return line to create a recirculation line... either above or below the T to the fuge it doesnt matter and another ball valve. That way you can set flow to the fuge anyway you want and use the second T/ball valve to adjust flow back to the display. The baffles are there to eliminate bubbles from your skimmer. You wont be getting any bubbles from the fuge so the extra plumbing is superfluous
Here is a cleaner shot of my plumbing and what Im talking about...

Re: Sump Question

A I guess a picture really is worth 1000 words lol Its 3/4" pvc and 3/4" loc-line I have a Y reducer in the fuge that splits to dual 1/2" loc-line so I can put the flow anywhere I want
