Question Durso Standpipe?

Okay.. I just finished making two durso standpipes. I was pleasantly surprised how simple they were to make and the glue dries so fast! No waiting at all

Anyway... I used schedule 40 PVC instead of the thinner walled CPVC (cheaper pvc).

Will it work okay with the sch40 or should I remake them using the thin walled cpvc?

The instructions say the drain 'works better' using the thin walled pipe.

Re: Durso Standpipe?

I used schedule 40 PVC and they work great!

It's funny that he would say that on his website, since the pipes he sells to the public are schedule 40 PVC.

Re: Durso Standpipe?

Has anybody run into problems fitting the standpipe into their overflow? I also went through the build process but couldn't get the darn thing to fit into my overflow. I know it's not recommended but has anybody had any success running a standpipe with smaller or equal size PCV then the overflow?

Re: Durso Standpipe?

I used a 5" piece of PVC pipe drilled with multiple holes spaced close together and capped with an end-cap.

Similar to this picture except I preferred holes over slats.

If you use this method, don't forget to drill a hole on the bottom of the endcap... it will prevent you from spilling water on the floor if you pull your pipes out for any reason... learned by expeirience... lol.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

My astrea snails love to hang out in my overflow... I see them all over my standpipes. I would not be able to sleep thinking they might block my drain and cause a flood.

Re: Durso Standpipe?

i plan to build one of these pretty soon. there is a modified version( http://www.rl180reef.com/180/pages/s...s/stockman.htm ) that is more compact. since my overflow is HOB i dont have as much space to work in. this one appears to be the same principle as well. im basically gonna cut a filter sock to fit inside the air space that is created under the PVC cap. it would be easy to remove and clean as well.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I saw this a while back but forgot all about it. Perhaps I'll build one this week.

Re: Durso Standpipe?

no strainer here also. if a snail get in there its a very fast 4 foot drop to a micron sock. then i just put them back. i have a megaflow overflow too. i use the 3/4 hole as an emergency overflow instead of a return. just a 90* bend an inch above the durso and flowing straight down into the sump. im probably going to do a stockman pipe on my 135 in progress. im not overly thrilled with the durso.
