Re: here i go again... protein skimmer time!

Hi!

If the plumbing leaving the skimmer is larger than the plumbing entering the skimmer, gravity should do the job of returning the water to the sump, if the sump is lower than the top of the exit plumbing. That is, if I understand your description...

Bingo! you may have to T it off as the turnover rate may be too much, coming right from the overflow. Steve

Re: here i go again... protein skimmer time!

ok ok ok im making progress here!

getting water from teh overflow. i have 2 options. i can tee it off. or i could drill a hole (half inchish) and put a fitting in there just for the skimmer. then the overflow would be draining in the 1 inch bulkhead as well as the 1/2inch hole for the skimmer.

so tee, or new hole?

also, according to the site i was reading about skimmers, i need to move about 30gph through this skimmer... thats not really a lot. anyone know how to determine the flowthrough of different size hose?

Re: here i go again... protein skimmer time!

mmmm with 30 gal flow you may need a bigger supply than you think because of back pressure, maybe a full sized T off the O/F and a valve, are you routing this back to the return area? Steve

LOL i think im recovered pretty well so far, so i think its about time to get stabbed / mutilated with the skimmer.

hows this look?

honestly ive actually had a bit of luck with pvc, so i dont anticipate screwing anything up too badly. the stuff that gets me hurt is glass or trying to build overflows lol

Re: here i go again... protein skimmer time!

Hi!

My 'puter's been down so I haven't been able to check in. The plan looks wonderful!

Make sure you are able to bring the return line all the way up to the top of the body - that was a big mistake that we made when we first built our skimmer.

Go for it now! That's what weekends are for :-)

Re: here i go again... protein skimmer time!

i will be sure that the return goes to the top of the skimmer. does it need to go past the collection cup? or just to the base of the colleciton cup?

i dont like talking to people i dont already know... which is silly because then i wouldnt be able to get to know people. point is, i dont like hanging around other people with the exception of my wife and a few friends... and those few friends like playing games too. so we play games together WAHA!

and yes, this skimmer should skim the liverock right out of the system. it will be 18 feet tall, and instead of 3 inch pvc, i decided to go with 3 trashcans stacked on top of each other and glued together. so itll be around.... 4 feet wide.

jk.... its not funny because thats something i would do
