I am an electrical engineer, and I had to jump on this one. I agree, the contacts are not designed for that type of cycling, BUT where would a grounded timer help you out in a failure? here is what is going to happen IF, and when the timer fails :

The copper contacts will either weld themselves together, running the powerhead all the time, or it will fail and not run at all,... But I see no need for a grounded timer. The grounded timer would only be a benefit only if you shorted to ground, and the contacts in the timer cannot, by design do this. The only way that would happen is if you spilled saltwater on it, conducting between the contacts, and the ground. So If you are spill prone, I would go the grounded route.

Re: $6 wave maker!!!!

I saw this DIY project somewhere else almost a year ago. I was going to give it try but never did. Lets hear from members who do give it a try. My 2 Ecotech Vortecs aren't made to work on a DIY $6.00 wave maker.(not a jab) The truth.

Re: $6 wave maker!!!!

well I am back from computer problems!

Ok I have opened mine up from running 2 years now and the tabs look the same. I have before when first trying to make it played with the unit open and powered and there is no electrical arch that can be seen. I do agree that it could be bad, but I have had no problems.

I did get the idea from this by looking at a way to make a wavemaker and thinking of something that turns on and off, the timer was it and I just played around with it, and walla! Like I said before the only hard part is getting the tabs bent right so there is no resistance.

Re: $6 wave maker!!!!

I haven't seriously considered a wave maker, but this sounds too interesting not to try it!
This is an example of the depth of creative expression that this hobby allows.
Good on ya Mr. Bojangles!
