Nick,
the eductor I made is probably not a true eductor (don't know what one really is) I just took my mechanical experience and made more of a venturi like system, but it acts the same way it just draws more volume through through the holes in the side. In the post I first saw these things in it did say that these work better with a pressure type pump, which we have.

Openbrain,
Is this the eductor you used for your DIY skimmer?

thanks Don, kooks great, and yes to get 5x more flow you would need a high pressure pump, but the can increase the flow with a pump with less pressure, around 2-3x the flow, which IMO is better than nothing, and for a few bucks to make, you cant go wrong

actually it is an eductor, just not as fancy as the ones that you can buy it draws water in as the pump is pushing it through the barb

remember these dont increase the pressure of the pump, they increase the volume, and the pump doesnt know its there (will not harm the pump)

Awesome!!!

I sadly was born with only thumbs. While I can pick up things with only thumbs, I'm always afraid to try it on my own. That's why I really love to read other people's DIY threads.

to be honest this project doesnt require a lot of skill, not as hard as taking pics, LOL, trust me, if you can use a drill you can make one of these

here is a link to the actual eductor, fancy version
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...003/review.htm

and here is a link that i got from Mojo that got me into taking the plunge
http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/sh...hlight=eductor

reefguard,
No, I used a beckett pond foamer but I've read that the eductor kicks a** over the pond foamer.

TDEVIL,
I agree the total cost of the unit was under 3 bucks, so what ever I can get to make the system better, even if it's just a little better is worth it. 3 bucks and no electricity, sounds good to me.

Curt,
these things are sooo easy to make, even a guy born with just thumbs could do it. If you want I can make them for you just pm. me with you output size and we can go from there.

Not to rub it in guys, but Teri could care less when I go to the hardware store or what I do there... She just rolls her eyes and says what now and will it make the tank overflow....

Ok all, here is the one that I had for 3/4" setup.
Pictures to follow this.
I started with a 3/4 x 3/4 slip to MPT, 1/2" x 1/2" hose barb and a 1" connector slip to slip.
1: cut the slip side of the 3/4 x 3/4 off a 1/4"
2: Cut all threads off the 1/2" x 1/2" hose barb
3: Grind down the hose barb to fit inside the 3/4 threaded end of the 3/4 x 3/4 connector. (Make it a snug fit)
4: Drill 8- 5/16" holes in the 1" connector so the edge of the holes are even with the center of the connector.
5: assemble in the order of the picture.
All parts in the picture are setup in the order and way that they go together.

Hope you enjoy.

eductor

No pics yet but my eductors were made with nylon hose barbs from home depot. I'll try to find the thread that i copyed the idea from.

The hose barbs fit snug right inside a male threaded coupling and all you have to do is drill the holes. I just cut two large slots on each side leaving 1/4" of plastic on each side where the slots are. They seem to move at least twice as much water as before. I have 1/2 my mak4 pushing two.

They add air to the water that is being injected into the skimmer.
Like a Venturi setup or a Beckett system.
