new project, filtration advice please.

Hi guys

looking at putting together a new system, 8" deep but only 1" square.
weird yep but should look impressive if done right.
I am looking at a low stocked , small fish setup with turfa rock almost top to bottom.
What im looking at advice for is the filtration setup. It needs to be external obviously, 1"square does'nt leave alot of room. Will be setup in an ajoining room at floor level and built by myself. Have owned my own enginnering shop so i have experiance.
Obviously low cost or i would'nt be in the DIY section, although making it myself is part of the fun.
Thought pump wise, one of those stainless steel centrel heating pumps might do the job?
Anyway don't want to witter on to much, that should be enougth to get things started.
If anyone has any ideas or needs more info before they can make a comment please just ask.

BTW first post, nice to meet you all.

Re: new project, filtration advice please.

For clairification are you talking about a tank that is 8' (feet) deep and 1' (foot) square? Like a square piller in a home?

Welcome to RS

Re: new project, filtration advice please.

HI Fasterstill! Welcome to RS! Great information to be found here and very knowledgeble people. So ask lots of questions.

As for your idea....

Did you mean 1' rather than 1" square? not much you can do in 1 inch sq. and 8 inches deep. But 1 foot sq. X 8 inches would be a micro nano system. Hopefully, one of the nanoers will join in soon and can help you with the filtration ideas for a system like this. Good Luck!

Re: new project, filtration advice please.

Well filtration is one issue but I think it could be delt with, however a bigger concern to me would be cleaning. When coraline algae or any algae starts to grow in the lower portion of the tank how are you going to get to it to clean it?

Re: new project, filtration advice please.

lighting is another issue, penetration to the bottom would be impossible.
gas exchange would be an issue [small surface area vs. volume] might create an anoxic zone at the bottom of a 8ftr. leading to an impossible to clean black gooey mess of a sand bed....but still...would sure be neat to see

Re: new project, filtration advice please.

If I where to attempt it (provided I could reach the bottom to clean) I believe my return line would be (water input) would be in the bottom 12" of the tank, so that all water would go in the bottom and out the top.....

just thinking outloud....

Re: new project, filtration advice please.

good idea dave..since it will be total DIY..maybe a closed loop to recirculate the volume bottom to top. with a few loc-line jets strategically aimed at keeping the sand bed cleaned. Maybe a pond foam rock background with shrooms in the portions where light would reach...don't know about fish selection 1ft square is a bit cruel...maybe some mollies

Re: new project, filtration advice please.

re the filtration, Im looking to use a reverse flow for the return flow, so bottom to top water flow.
Lighting, looking at lighting from inside the frames of all corners, top to bottom so they don't realy need to be high output as there only 6" from the turfa rock.
Cleaning could be a problem especialy as the tank is being made off 20mm think acyrilic. Thinking maybe a custom magnetic jobie.
Fish, well this you guys could help with as well . As i say i've been out of the game for a long time so i don't know whats available now. Don't mind if its something i need to order as i've got the time to wait untill this tanks ready.
You know the habitat there getting so , small, possibly a group. Im open to all ideas especialy weird , unusual ones.

cheers for the feedback sofar.

Re: new project, filtration advice please.

interesting idea on the lighting...maybe some high intensity leds in a sealed strip along the corners hmm sounds like fun....btw, tufa rock is a no-no, it contains metals.

The tank will be in quite a ligh place anyway so its just for highlighting and evening realy. You sure about the turfa, my local shop , which is quite a big setup , uses it in loads of its tanks, and i,ve already got tons of the stuff ):
