Re: PVC LR Shelf Rack

I might be a little concerned about the amount of flex you have. Are you planning on adding rock on top of the base rock that is attached? Over time, the pvc may flex more where it will wind up falling all the way back and down causing an avalanche of all the rock that may be on top. Just a thought.

Re: PVC LR Shelf Rack

Jynx-I just press fitted and tapped with a hammer to make a good fit. I don't think that the pvc will come loose. I wasn't sure about the glue either so I didn't use it.

I'm sure the glue is safe as it used for potable (drinkable) water, but I don't think I need it. (i'm might reconsider later. particularly the top part where the angle turns into a horizontal.)

Anyone have Any thoughts on if pvc glue is safe fully submerged in the tank?

Re: PVC LR Shelf Rack

hahahahaha I LOVE IT!
Check it out! The LR didn't flex the pipe much!
I put it in place in the tank... and it looks good.

The tank pics don't do it justice, so i'll post more when the water is in and the lighting is in place.

Re: PVC LR Shelf Rack

This is gonna be interresting.
In theory even if the top part flexes too much the zip ties should hold it in more or less position. I think it would give the livestock a chance to escape if necessary. Of course that is just the fish so I would be careful in coral placement and not put anything under that point.
Of course, if the joints give way then it would be sudden and that would bother me.
We used the glue in plumbing our tanks, sump, and fuge so I would think it would be safe if given some time to dry fully.
I really don't know but that is likely what I would do.

Re: PVC LR Shelf Rack

yes it is safe...it works by actually melting the joints together

Re: PVC LR Shelf Rack

it would be the same glue you use to glue the PVC together for the plumbing of a reef system, so it shouldn't have any effects... I love the PVC idea.. Lots of saving in liverock purchasing!

Re: PVC LR Shelf Rack

A cement block would have worked, yep, but i wouldn't have gotten the 'hanging out of no where look'. hahaha...
The tank is 120G (48x24x24) and the structure extends from one side of the tank to mid tank.

The structure now only flexes about 1 inch. (I was using base rock to see how far it would flex if i decided to use that much weight.)

The LR I used to clad the structure was light so the structure only ended up flexing about 1 inch!!
So i'm not worried about it collapsing and crushing anything.

The silicone and gravel worked like a charm. Once coralline sets in i definately won't see the exposed pvc.

I didn't silicone the zip ties cause their black and where i used them, you can barely notice them.

I can't wait to show you guys how it looks in the tank! Soon to come!

Re: PVC LR Shelf Rack

you could add more tees with a vertical brace towards the left side to keep it from flexing. They also make sch 80 pvc pipe & fittings which are much stronger. PVC glue & primer is 100% reef safe & I would glue to keep it together, if it were to come apart you would have a rock avalanche.

Re: PVC LR Shelf Rack

Sorry for the delay !! here are the pics!! let me know what you think!
Once the coraline rolls in, the visible pvc should become hidden and less recognizable.
(please forgive the lack of coral and fish - but their coming )
