inexpensive wavemaker

just ordered one today, seems to fit the criteria of a wavemaker.
I'll let you know how it works out

OK...I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, so could someone explain how this would be a wavemaker?

Pretty simple actually. Look at a Red Sea wavemaker and see what it does, it turns on up to 4 powerheads in sequence. This does the same thing set the duration from 1 minute to 15 and each PH would run that alotted time and then the next would.
I believe the redsea has a radom pattern which this doesn't but for 29 bucks, I can live with out it. (Or just turn on the mike input, crank some Led Zep or Rush and let the music set to flow....)

The only concern I would have is that it will abuptly turn the power on and off to the power heads. This will reduce the life of the impeller dramatically. The one I have, the Aquamedic one, winds the power up gently to each PH as it turns it on and off .....
But hey, at that price who's complaining. Good spot and a good idea

it's called a soft start feature, and i agree on shortening the life of the power heads.

Well, it arrived yesterday and I installed last night. Very well made metal case. Currently have it running 2 maxijets on about a 2 minute cycle. Works fine, now to see for how long.

Thats cool Dan, let me know how it works I'm already interested. I was just looking at mag pumps, since I got the two scwds I was going to get the powerheads out of the tank and use the scwds as a closed loop but if that wave maker works I might go that way instead of buying another pump.

I been researching "soft start" and there seems to be two trains of thought. Some say it is important others don't.

here is a post from RC on it:

'soft-start' on an AC motor is a pretty complicated thing. In order to 'soft-start', you'd need to be able to ramp up the AC frequency to slowly spin up the motor. AC motors will only spin at a single speed, varying the voltage will do nothing except heat up the motor. There are such things as 'soft starters' but they are pretty specialized and expensive.. Not something you would find in a $100 wave maker. So, for all intensive purposes, disregard it.
