anti-siphon holes

Alright all you DIYers- i need to drill an anti-siphon hole in my return pipe. I know to drill it at a 45 degree down angle but what diameter hole? I was thinking 1/8"-1/4". It is 3/4" pipe. Thanks

1/8" will do very nicely.

it doesnt have to be big any air sucked in will do and prevent the back siphon

i agree 1/8 in would be fine just make sure you keep it checked for blockage.like snails,ect.

Maybe a compromise of 3/8ths is in order

I think that is what I drilled mine at because of the same advice, 1/4 vs 1/8.
Quick question, why the 45 degree angle?

So that water that spraysout of the holes, ( and a bit will) will spray down into the tank, instead of the back of the tank, creating a possible mess.

Oh .. ok .. that 45 degrees down. I was picturing drilling down from the top of the tank and thinking that would just make a big mess.
As I said before mine are 3/8" drilled at a 90 degree angle about 1/4" below the surface. Thinking about adding another hole on the other side just incase a snail decides to rest on the other one.

so Boomer, you drilled yours above the water level. Do you get noise from the stream? I see this method would ensure no water from the tank siponed to the sump.
