Idiot Diyer Here Need Help!!!

okay well i am not good at building stuff so i am going to need some help on a sump.. its not goting to be big.. about 10 gallons but thats all that will fit in my 55 gal stand... im going to go buy a hang on overflow here tommarow... as far as size, im thinking 3/4 inch bulk heads for overflow.. now first off what size pump will be suffiecint for the return.. i plan on having a y piece where i can then add 2 spraybars running down both sides of my display in the back corners..... is this to vauge or does is it understandable.. the total distance from sump to display shouldnt exceed 5 ft.. i still have to get exact measurments...the will be 4 90 degree angles.. one right after the sump, one coming out fome under the stand, and 2 at both corners for the spray bars... i have no idead what size pump to get.. and what do i need to get in case of an emergency and i need a check point.also any specific plumming parts that will be needed.....any info will be greatly appreciated

Mag 950 would be good. I would go with the 1" flex pipe to the sump but when you buy the prefilter it should have this already.

I use clear hose from the pump and attached it to PVC pipe.
The 90 degree elbow going into the tank and just above the water surface I drilled a small hole facing towards the tank or water surface. This hole stops the siphon back into the sump if the electricity ever goes out.

I would run atleast a Mag 7 or maybe a 9. For the return pump. The overflow will only run as much as the pump will return, I think, I don't have one of these, so check with someone else too.
The Mag 7 should give you about 500 GPH return on your tank. The Mag 9 would be about 650 to 700 GPH.

I use the MAG 7 on my 80 gallon and it works great. On your 55 gallon the MAG 7 maybe your best pump.

I don't think you need to use a T on the 55 gallon unless you are wanting to put it at both ends of the tank. I would use only one out put into the tank as this will create better water movement. If you go with 2 inputs into the tank you may want a bigger pump than a mag 7.
If you use PVC pipe get the 2 part glue. The primer is purple and the glue is clear. I have had no problems with this glue leaking.
Are you going to use PVC only? you will still need some kind of pipe adapters to connect to the pump. I would get the pump first and then see what I needed from there.

great info all very informative and useful thanks.i agree if your going to use a t i would probally go with the mag 9 because of the flow restriction with the t and the 90's.

i would go with 2 returns myself.like you said you want as much water movement as you can handle.1inch pvc should be fine.

? don't understand.
The Mag 7 comes with 1/2 connector and 3/4 inch connectors I think. It has been awhile for me and don't remember what comes in the box with the pump.
The Mag 9 is 3/4 inch connectors I think.
I would use 3/4 inch pipe to the T or Y. and then use 1/2 pipe.
I think home depot had the T with 3/4 in and 1/2 inch out converter's.

Bigger PVC at the pump and smaller PVC pipe at the Y would create a jet stream.
what size holes are you going to drill into the spray bars?
