Sick Whale Likely Cause of Mass Stranding

Quote:
The sick whale had been one of about 85 false killer whales that swam onto the beach near Busselton, Australia — about 230 kilometers (138 miles) south of Perth — Thursday morning.

A further 20 whales were swimming in dangerously shallow waters just offshore.

More than 1,500 volunteers answered urgent appeals for help, and after hours of efforts managed to herd the whales back to sea.

Whales, and false killer whales in particular, are often involved in mass beachings, but scientists have been unable to explain the phenomenon.

One prominent theory is that one or more sick whales swim into shallow waters and are followed by the entire pod of highly social animals.

I saw a show just last week about a pair that had beached themselves. An aquarium took them in cared for them for 4 months and then released them together. Sure would be nice if they could figure out why they do this but, that probably wouldn't stop it. It is very sad when it happens.
