| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Aquarium offers students a taste of marine biology Thursday, July 1, 2004 By Glen Leyden, The Star "In a few weeks, they'll be snorkeling near shipwrecks. They will be examining plankton and measuring ocean currents. They will skim the waters off the Bimini Islands in the Caribbean for rarely seen invertebrates, explore an uninhabited island and sleep aboard the R/V Coral Reef II, an 85-foot research vessel. One week in the Bahamas will give three of the Southland's brightest high school seniors an inside look at marine biology that would make a young Jacques Cousteau envious. The Shedd Aquarium's high school marine biology program has been helping students explore sea life for more than 25 years, said Nicole Pierson, mentor program coordinator at the aquarium in Chicago. "I've had a lot of our students say it is a life changing experience," she said. Last week, 30 high school students met in the bowels of the world's largest indoor aquarium for the start of a weeklong class at Shedd to prepare them for their July trip to the Bahamas. Students paid $1,600 for the program, which preaches conservation and gives hands-on marine biology experience. About 100 students applied and a third were accepted." >Full Article Here<
