News: Nemo's impact on reefs

I guess this really isn't news to us, but it's good to know people are starting to take notice.

Reefs at risk after Disney film

When I read that up to 8,000 animals a month I almost threw-up. The story just gets worse the more you read

Makes you want to be sure you are getting captive bread animals when possible.

Yes, I always encourage getting captive bred animals whenever possible. Actually, if I don't know that something is captive bred I will no longer buy it. I think my Royal Gramma is the only think in my tank right now that was likely not captive bred. Exchanging coral frags has worked out well for me also. I highly recommend it.

Captive bred is the way to go. I think the harvasting sites should be regulated!! That would mean a higher price for a fish but maybe that would 'weed-out' newbie buyers?

Yikes, I hate it when we're right somtimes. I shudder to think how many have ended up in the toilet, the one that doesn't go back to the sea! So sad!

Captive bred and education is what we can do.

What I don't get is why are they collecting so many clowns, when it is almost cheaper and easier to buy captive bred clowns. Plus, they have less disease and are generally better aclimated to captive conditions.

They are the easiest SW fish to breed, yet we keep diminishing their native stocks.

I expected the article to focus on Tangs, but it is more alarming to realize that most of those exports are clowns.

Nemo was such a cute movie- it's too bad that things like this have to happen becuase people see something in a movie & have to run right out & buy it without doing their research first... The same thing happened after 101 Dalmations... People are just too irresponsible & impatient- they want the pretty fishies, but they don't want to bother with learning all about them...

The only reason they're collected is someone is making a profit for doing so. It's that simple. If the demand is there, someone will do the deed for the money and not concern themselves with the wellfare of the fish. It's up to responsible reefers like us to make ourselves heard and insist on captive bred species and encourage strict regulations on harvesting. I wouldn't mind paying more if it meant that a few fish would not have to take that swirly ride in the toilet and find no light at the end of the tunnel.

Since you guys are talking about conservation issues, what are your thoughts on >>MAC certification<< or >>Reefballs<< ???

Interesting links Curt! Maybe it's time we all started to ask out LFSs if they or their providers are MAC certified for their captured animals. From the site: "About 98 percent of the marine aquarium trade is based on organisms captured in the wild, where the issues of reef and animal health are most important. Therefore, the MAC Core Standards focus on the chain of custody for these organisms." That 98% number scares me. Hopefully this is an organization without government links but that can enforce its standards. (Making a mental note to do some more reading and research...)

The reefball idea sounds like a great conservation idea. It's a shame we must now put all of this effort into rebuilding something that careless humans are primarily responsible for losing in the first place, but it's encouraging to see that effort being made. People are really starting to take notice of impending ecological disasters and do something about it.

We either take care of the reefs and the hobby or the government is going to come in and do it for us. That's one of the reasons I am active in my local reefing organization http://www.seasl.org and why I like fragging corals.
