| Reef Lobster ![]() | 1st Genetically engineered aquarium fish In fact, the article says it's the 1st genetically engineered pet. Here's the info; http://www.boston.com/news/science/a...der_the_radar/ Most interesting to me, it said it was crossed with genes of a type of coral. |

| Court Computer Wiz ![]() | The distinction they are drawing for the "first genetically engineered pet" is that these are supposed to have been created by gene splicing from another species as opposed to selective breeding of a given species or set of subspecies to produce specific traits. There are a world of freshwater fish that were produced through selective breeding which really is the very basic gnetic engineering, FWIW.

| Contributing Member ![]() | I love them but yeah at that price they will be a fad. We sell them for 9.99 a pair even though our distributor said retail price should be more like 12-14 each! Yeah right ![]() I have no issue since they can’t live locally here in the US and are not harmful to people or other tank mates If eaten. That and the fact that FW fish have been selectively breed for centuries. Does anyone think fancy goldfish suit a purpose in nature other the just being that ugly And yet my 220 was full of orandas at one point. Here is some info not mentioned… Going by memory so forgive me ![]() The engineered fish were first designed in Singapore. And sold to aquarists there last year. The Asian strain is sterile in order to keep the patent and corner the market. I believe I read somewhere that the US strain is different in that it can be bread and unless you are breeding large numbers to resell the paten owners are Ok with it. Here is a quick link to one of the 2 patent owners site…. http://www.segrestfarms.com/go.ihtml...nc=glofish_faq And look for the brief article in TFH magazine from Jan 2004 Just my .02 S

| Reef Lobster ![]() | That "glo" gene is becoming the new thing (well, the new consumer "thing") as I have seen it used in various crops and rodent species in the past (including rabbits). Will the glofish be a slippery slope, we will just have to see? TG, Canada or California banned them? Take er easy Scott T.
