Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Lynn's frag tank experiment

Something is just not right.
I set this tank up yesterday and the bottom is already covered. I guess I need to stack the LR or something. I have my little rubble dish with some keya tree, colt coral, palys and mushrooms and they are all open in the dish. I can't even see the rubble since the corals are covering it. Then I got the toadstools today as well as some little mushrooms. Not sure what color the shrooms are since it was late afternoon and I am still working with natural sunlight on the tank. I am beginning to think I may not put a light on at all. Everything looks so happy now, I am afraid I would fry it if I added the MH. Now when I try something other than softies that is another matter but my softies are loving the window view.
I'll try to get some happy shots tomorrow. I am glad there is a club meeting this weekend. I can bring Kenya tree for everybody and thin out my forest so I have room for some more frags. Oh no, I'll probably get frags at the meeting too.
It's a never ending cycle.

Re: Lynn's frag tank experiment

I'm running this HOB refugium on my 10g frag tank. It's got a built in skimmer. Granted, probably not the best skimmer
in the world, but it works.

http://shop.aquatraders.com/Hang-On-...in-p/43016.htm

It's powered with a MJ1200. I keep my heater in there and a 6" DSB with a hunk of cheato and a little piece of live rock
about the size of a baseball. There is a little powerhead in the return section that just churns water for gas exchange.
Doesn't pump the water anywhere, just sucks it up and bounces it off the baffle.

There's (6) T4 Biax 13w bulbs in the fixture for 78w total. PC bulbs. It's a Catalina fixture that originally came with only
3 lights. Had 2 fixtures and didn't need the other, so I crammed all 6 bulbs and 3 ballasts in this one fixture. Had to hack
a hole in the top and mounted a 40mm computer fan for cooling. It runs on a 12v 600mah wall wort 24/7. I run the
lights 8.5hrs per day.

Sorry for the pics quality, had to crop and edit them to met the 50k upload limit.

Don't laugh, it's full of hair algae at the moment.

Re: Lynn's frag tank experiment

Very nice.
I totally forgot about this thread.
Got the replacement part for the light and it is up an running. Kinda funny but with what I paid for the used light and for the part to fix it, I could have bought one new. Live and learn I guess.
I think I have like 4 power heads in there now so things are really moving. I'm sure I don't need them all but they were just sitting around so why not. The softies are all growing like crazy. I have a kenya tree forest and some shrooms, toadstools, zoas and a couple of other things growing like crazy. I just kep putting rubble and fallen pieces in the bucket and they attach. This is way easier than I thought it would be. The hardest part is keeping the water level constant. I have to totally unroll the hose to reach the tank.
I need to find people who want the frags and then start some more difficult stuff to see what I can really do. So far it is a lot of fun to watch.
