Starting a 10g frag tank

I want to set up a small frag tank. I haven't done much fragging but my kenya tree has decided to frag itself and there are several other corals in the tank that I at least want to try to frag.
I have a 10g tank just sitting around so I figure I can start there. I have tons of LR so I can put whatever in there I need. I have various power heads but am thinking of one or two Koralia nanos or Koralia 1s. I am thinking about the new LED from Coral Dynamics which should give me plenty of light and allow me to adjust it up or down depending on what I am fragging.
Now to the real question. What skimmer can I put on a 10g tank?
Other than egg-crate racks, fragging supplies, carbon etc am I forgetting something?
So far this is just an idea but I am thinking more and more about it.
Let me know what you think and what I may be forgetting.

Re: Starting a 10g frag tank

Sounds exciting! Now for reality....

Would I do it again? Nope!
Well I would but probably not on a 10g tank... tight quarters with just a few frags in there... I'd get a 20g or so and go with that. Would make skimmer/light and other things more easily accessible. The 10g is just so small it makes it tough!!

Now if you WANT to continue with the 10g I'm behind you 100%

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Starting a 10g frag tank

Somehow I knew you would jump in here.
Well a 20 wouldn't add much to the cost. Just the cost of the tank and a bit bigger power heads. I know I can use an Aqua C Remora on a 20 since I am already doing it. The light should still be fine.
Amazing how these things happen. It started with me trying to find something to do with the 10g tank sitting around.
Just my latest train of thought.

sounds to me like you're about to have a 20g with a 10g sump?

Can't wait to see this coming together!!!

Re: Starting a 10g frag tank

I just started a little 10g frag tank.

It has 78w PC lighting and a HOB refugium. I got the refugium from Aquatraders. It has a built in skimmer. It looks very similar to the CPR HOB refugium with the skimmer. It doesn't come with a powerhead. I'm using a MJ1200. I filled the bottom with sand to create a DSB. There's 6" or 7" of sand in there. I run a cheap clamp-on 25w light for the refugium and there is some cheato in there as well as some rock rubble. The skimmer works good. It's not a Euro Reef, but it does the job.

Hang On Refugium with Protein Skimmer

I know a lot of people have had poor luck purchasing from Aquatraders. I had good luck. Paid for the item and it arrived about 10 days later.

Re: Starting a 10g frag tank

maybe you could plumb the 10 gal into you're existing system. That's what I intend to do with a 20 gal I have sitting around.

Re: Starting a 10g frag tank

I tried that before with a 24g Aquapod. It worked but never really worked well.
I think Al has convinced me that if I do it, I need to go with a 20 long for more stability and ease of maintenance.
It is still on the maybe list so we'll see what I end up doing.

Re: Starting a 10g frag tank

Keeping the levels in the two tanks stable. I had a small pump moving water out of the pod and into the reef and a u tube to move water back into the pod. When a bubble formed in the tube the whole thing was unbalanced. Never got too bad but was just a pain. If I had an overflow box I could have probably done it better but I really didn't like the look either.

Re: Starting a 10g frag tank

Now you are really tempting me.
Frank would kill me but then again I always seem to come back to life.
Something to ponder even more.
What is the length of the tank? I have a spare PC light that I could use for softies to get started. Frag racks to move them closer to the light.
I think I may be getting into trouble here.
