| Sea Pen | Captive Coral Breeding ??? I think tank raised corals are an awesome idea. In the next few weeks I hope to start fragging some ricordeas - I have to get my frag "system" set up. In the mean time. I was wondering about the challenges of sexual coral reproduction in captivity. I've "bred" urchins before - but that was in a biology lab and is easy as you can force them to expel gametes via injection (poor little urchins). Does anyone know any good resources for breeding corals (sexual reproduction) vs. fragging them? My goal would be to grow new phenotypes (see Mendelian genetics) or at the very least to just to breed new corals sexually. I would prefer to do SPS (acro's or monti's) or LPS barring that. Any tips towards resources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

| Has been struck by the ban stick | Re: Captive Coral Breeding ??? Well corals like mushrooms and anemones, they are simple cell division. One makes 2 and so on.....I know others do use sexual reproduction as far as releasing sperm into the water column, but I am not sure which. A fast way for ricrodias to split besides cutting them is gravity, hang one off the side of LR and let it stretch, it will eventually grow out. |
