Frag Glue Ideas/Tips

Many of you know this already but Super Glue (name brand or not) is called "Cyanoacrylate". You can get it from Hobby Stores in larger quantities and usually for less money than other places. Hobbyists use it in building many different types of models and R/C vehicles.

When you use it for fragging it's best to use the slower setting thicker version which can be balled "Gel" or sometimes "Gap Filling". An example from one company is from the Zap company Zap Homepage and the thick is called Zap-A-Gap. Now we're using this thicker because it does a better job of filling in the irregularities of coral to disk/plug and it gives a longer working time. One thing I've been doing is utilizing this "Thicker" glue for it's gap filling then using an "Accelerator" to "Kick It" once I have the frag in it's place. This "Accelerator" from Zap is called "ZAP® Zip Kicker®" and it seems to be reef safe as well. I just noticed a few "Frag Glue" companies are also selling their own version of this "Kicker".

So next time you're needing some "Frag Glue" instead of paying an arm & leg for that tiny tube go to your local Hobby Shop (LHS) and get some Zap-A-Gap and ZAP Kicker! Save some money on glue and BUY MORE CORALS!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: Frag Glue Ideas/Tips

Great info for anyone just getting into fragging.
I was researching for 6 months reading all kinds of threads in disbelief.
They can't mean regular superglue? It's all kinds of chemicals!
No! Not superglue superglue!

Works like a charm!
I will have to check the hobby shop to see how prices compare.
My LFS carries CorAffix. It's a superglue gel.
$14.99 for 2 oz. I know the normal tubes are like 1/8 oz for $2.99.

They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. For comparison *which in THAT case is comparable* my local hobby shop has the brand I just noted (Zap-a-gap) for $10.99 for a 2oz bottle. That would equate to somewhere around $47.84 for the same amount if you bought the small "convenient" tubes. (at $2.99 - 1/8 oz)

And I honestly believe my frags are better now that I have more glue on hand. When I only had one small tube of it I was trying to be "Stingy" and had more "Break Loose" than I do now.

Re: Frag Glue Ideas/Tips

I use a product called IC-Gel which is just another brand of Cyanoacrylate which I have found online at a couple different virtual aquarium and hobby stores.

Re: Frag Glue Ideas/Tips

How do you apply the "accelerator" once the coral has covered the bonding site?

Re: Frag Glue Ideas/Tips

If you can't get the accelerator TO the actual glue itself you can't.

Here's how I do it.. I'm an "Over Gluer" now so don't take this as gospel!

Let's say I am gluing a Xenia frag. I make a glob of glue the approximate size of the base of the Xenia. Then I push the stalk into the "glob" it pushes out into an area LARGER than the stalk. Then I hit it with the "Kicker" (just takes a small shot) and it's a chain reaction. Even though I am only "hitting" the outer edge of the glob the "reaction" carried under the frag and "Sets" the whole glue glob. If the "Kicker" doesn't hit ANY part of the glue it's useless.

On a side note.. the kicker smells like "Cotton Candy" to me. It's a pleasure to use

Re: Frag Glue Ideas/Tips

Have you tried this technique with other soft leathers?
I tried a green finger leather and it slimed all up and floated away.
Held for maybe a day.
I may have to experiment with my xenia.

No not yet. Give it a try and let me know what you come up with. I find that if I can keep it "still" for just a couple of days the coral will attach itself on a long term basis. It's like a "tac-weld" for corals

Re: Frag Glue Ideas/Tips

Do NOT spray the accelerator around stony corals, it will kill them. If you add the glue and then spray with the accelerator you will still have time to set the frag in place before it hardens.

I personally don't use the accelerator after any coral has been set in the glue, it is either before or not at all.

Re: Frag Glue Ideas/Tips

Can you drip the accelerator on the glue glob with an eye dropper, rather than spray it?
