Question Hardiest Coral

What is the best coral to start out with? My tank has been set up for six weeks and is still empty has a few crabs and snails and I would like to put a few corals in it before I add my fish. What would you suggest? I love The carpet zoanthids are they easy to keep?

Re: Hardiest Coral

Hi!
I'd say that Zoanthids are a good first coral from a care standpoint. However, I should mention that they contain what is probably the strongest naturally occuring NEUROTOXIN known to man. These should be handled with great care. Other good choices (if there's room in your' tank) would be xenia, or Colt corals. They both require little care, and grow quite quickly. The Xenia corals will multiply on their own, and the Colt will require only a sharp pair of scissors and some super-glue. Hope that this helps.
Regards'
Dean

Those are good suggestions. I woild add mushrooms to the list as well. They tend to do well under most circumstances and are super pretty.

Re: Hardiest Coral

I also say mushrooms. Anthelia is also fairly easy...Zenia IMO, needs good light to pulse, if not, it tends to get long and skinny, eventually dies.

Re: Hardiest Coral

Shrooms are the easiest, but not necessarily the best to start off with unless you want a tank full of them.

Same goes for xenia and anthelia and green star polyps.

"best" is a completely different question than "hardiest." In terms of "best" I'd have to go with toadstool leather, zoanthid, colt coral. They're extremely hardy but less invasive.

Re: Hardiest Coral

Frogspawn is a hardy and attractive LPS. Requires good lighting though.

Re: Hardiest Coral

I ended up getting Zoo's and mushrooms first. They were fine so I got some star polyps. Now I have a small frag of frogspawn and hammer coral that look great and I just love. Sometimes looking at my reef tank makes me think I wasted years of my life with freshwater.

Re: Hardiest Coral

I vote for zoos, mushrooms and leathers as the easiest to keep. They survived our tank crash when other corals died and they are beautiful with a huge variety.

I have several strains of mushroom corals in my reef tank. I am amazed at how fast they reproduce and spread. In two month's time, I easily have 2-3 times as many as I started out with. They have required absolutely no special care.
