| fully trained mod,,,its my fault~ ![]() | How do you tell if an Acro is dead? I went and visited some petstores yesterday and I was looking in a tank and i noticed a bright green acro shoved behind the rock work... I mean it was bright green... I asked the worker if it was for sale thinking it fell behind the rocks by accident... He said ohhh no its dead,, I said really!!!!! I have never seen such a bright color of a dead acro,,, Dont they usually go all White and eventually brown? Ok so I walked through the store and I kept thinking about that supposed dead coral... Like a dumby I asked if it was dead I would like to take it home lol... I felt so dumb....he looked at me like ok... He said it is dead because it doesnt have any tissue??? Well I noticed alot of acros in stress look very much like sticks...So needless to say I braught this dead coral home... I really dont think it is dead.. If it is Im gonna be soooooo embarrassed... But the coloring is so bright. Well I put it in the tank and it had a dicharge (white) coming out of the tips where I touched it.. So back to the regular question... How do you know an acro is dead.. ![]()

Usually when a SPS is dead it is white, or over gown with Algea and then has a brown color. Unless it is overgrown with Coraline algae that is green, but that usually isn't a bright green color. Can you see small polyps on it? It may take some time for them to come back out after acclimation to your tank and lights.

| Wannabe Guru ![]() | Re: How do you tell if an Acro is dead? No I don't believe it's dead especially if there's a dicharge (white) but usually it's slime and not of any particular color. What may have happened is it became very light in color because it was exposed to very intense light but it's salvageable in my experience. I would place it on the substrate and see how it reacts.

| Acropora ![]() | Re: How do you tell if an Acro is dead? Send me a piece of it I'll check it to see if it's dead or not... ![]() Actually the best way to tell if an acro is dead or not it to just observe it and see if you can see any polyps extending from it. It may take some time to tell as several acro's have very very short polyps.

| Wannabe Guru ![]() | Re: How do you tell if an Acro is dead? When a coral is in that condition usually doesn't extend the polyps at least during the day but the fact that it still has color is a clear indication that it's still alive albeit stressed. I went thru a similar situation with most of my SPS and even those that lost most of their tissue survived and recovered: Corals losing color ???

| Plate Coral | Re: How do you tell if an Acro is dead? Hopefully you are able to save it. And then you will have a freebie from the LFS. If it works out for ya i would tell them you want to see all their dead corals before they get rid of them. Ya might be able to score some more. |
