Thumbs up Baby Bangaii Eggs Hatching (Video)

This video is of Day 19 (from date of egg transfer to male) bangaii babies. You can see them in the tumbler as they have started to emerge from the egg sack. Also a few have already decided to swim out of the tumbler and into the holding net.

Timeline for these babies:
Egg transfer to male - March 8 2006 Day 0
Forced Spit of eggs - March 13 2006 Day 5
Date of Video - March 27 2006 Day 19

Pardon the background music...Boston Fan here. Needed something to cover the noise of the shop.

Enjoy!

Re: Baby Bangaii Eggs Hatching (Video)

Out of curiousity, why do you strip the male of the eggs? Why not let him mouth brood the eggs naturally? What benefit do you get from stripping the eggs from the male?

From what I understand it's very stressful on the fish to be forced to spit the eggs and artificially reared fish tend not to be as good parrents as ones that are naturally reared.

Re: Baby Bangaii Eggs Hatching (Video)

Kim- Very far from expert on these guys...each new batch is like hatching them for the first time...just too exciting!

Cougra- The main reason I pull them early is so the male can continue eating and stay fat and healthy. It is a bit stressful for him but he seems to recover fine. During the 20-28 days of holding, he does not eat, gets weak and may consume part or all of the nest toward the end. Also the female is ready in just a few days after release to load him up again, so he has very little time to eat between nests.

Frank Marini - a published expert on Bangaii (THE expert for most of us) recommends pulling the nest after around 12 days and allowing the male to recover. Mouth brooding is an instinct, not a learned behavior. The pairs I have came from ORA, so they were raised in the same manner and these pairs have held to term on each of their first broods.
