My system is 4 to 1 as well. Not good at all but until I can get my hands on this it will have to do

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Zero Waste 75gpd Ro/di Units!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I did just put in a new membrane, but it definitely was about 2to1. This is a little off topic, but I couldn't get the bottom two units open to replace the sediment and pre carbon filters. Is there a special trick or does it take a special wrench? Just curious because I was giving it all I have and couldn't get either of them to budge.

What kind of price points are we looking at for the units? I'm looking to buy a RO/DI unit in the next few days and if the price points are close to what i would be paying for a unit here i would wait till this one comes out.

Re: Zero Waste 75gpd Ro/di Units!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My question is this retrofittable (I think I made up a word) to exisiting ro/di units? Can I just switch membranes and add a pressure pump to make this work on my existing 5 stage unit? And of course what kind of membrane life can we expect?

Yep, you can get a filter wrench to open em up. Although a big set of vice grips, maybe even an oil filter wrench would work if you have one handy.

Question Re: Zero Waste 75gpd Ro/di Units!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a marine engineer/power plant operator and know how an ro works it Has to have waste water to carry away contaminates from the membrane or it Will clog up fast and not work very well or actually tear the membrane.

Not knocking your product just curious. Care to explain how this miracle ro unit works with no waste water, thanks Keith

This isn't the first ZERO waste system to come through this is just another offering. As for HOW they work... I'm clueless but that's normal

Re: Zero Waste 75gpd Ro/di Units!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I imagine the replacement of the membranes are going to be much quicker. That seems a given. What would be nice if they came up with a 1% waste system. Basically a zero waste with a flush kit.
If I remember right when we first started installing RO units in our houses close to 16 years ago I was told they were 7 : 1. 1 gallon for every 7 wasted. I always shook my head at that.
It would be nice to be able to factor membrane life vs waste of water cost. I do also wonder if your tossing 1 RO membrane per month is that greener then dumping 100g of water?
I'm still super interested. But I do like that people are asking for a more in depth understanding.

Re: Zero Waste 75gpd Ro/di Units!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What most of the zero waste systems do (and I would be willing to bet this one does also), is use a pressure pump to increase the pressure above tap levels, and then the waste water line is connected to the hot water line and the waste is forced back into your water system. So it is not truly a zero waste, it just pumps the waste water back into your normal house plumbing to be used at some other time.

Re: Zero Waste 75gpd Ro/di Units!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Kim's correct . . .

Quote:
Reducing Reverse Osmosis Water Waste:

Overview
Wastewater is a by-product of the reverse osmosis water purification process. Even the best residential reverse osmosis systems will make almost 4 gallons of water brine for every one-gallon purified, while lower grade systems can waste as much as 8 gallons of water per gallon purified. Recently some companies have introduced "zero waste" reverse osmosis systems, which do not waste any water. These systems still produce brine water as a by-product of the reverse osmosis process, but can labeled as "zero waste" systems because the brine water is recycled; not flushed down the drain as wastewater.

The "Zero Waste" Reverse Osmosis System Process
"Zero Waste" reverse osmosis systems come in two basic types. The more advanced types of "zero waste" systems eliminate water waste by pumping the brine water into the hot water plumbing instead of down the drain. The drawback to this design is that the brine water injected into the hot water line can be discharged from your kitchen sink faucet on your hands, cooking, dishes, etc, and into your dishwasher. The less advanced types of "zero waste" systems will pump the brine water back into the cold water line that feeding the reverse osmosis unit. The downside to this design is that the additional concentrated brine water in the feed water will force the reverse osmosis system to work harder and wear down the system components faster resulting in more frequent filter changes and overall shorter system life than a comparably equipped standard reverse osmosis system. Both systems are effective at eliminating water waste but their downsides are significant.

We had one of these installed in the store, I had never really considered it zero waste... Was hoping for something a little different
