Enough Time Wasted

Hey everyone. AS many of you know I recently lost my Little buddy. I had Jose for around a year and seven months. A while back he found a little hole in my canopy and went carpet surfing. I was and still am very upset. I loved that little fish. He was what made me love the Reefing Hobby so much. Well, i have gone a few months without a BSJF, and I feel like something is missing. I cannot add a BSJF to my current tank as it is a rimless Elos tank. So....here comes the fun part. I am looking into building a custom Blue Spot Jawfish Tank. My Uncle and I have already discussed the build and have a few very good ideas. I want to keep a pair if these little guys. So I need the tank to be large enough, so if I happen to get two males they can have enough room to establish territories.

Here are the designs I am considering: (all glass will be starfire)
First: 30 inches long X 24 inches Wide X 30 inches Tall

Second: 48 inches long X 20 inches Wide X 24 inches Tall

Third: 30 inches Long X 30 inches Wide X 30 inches Tall

All of these sizes come out to around 100 gallons.

As for filtration, I will be using a custom made sump, along with either an ASM G2 or an Elos NS Skimmer.

Lighting, I want to keep this tank as cool as I can, so probably T5s. I want to add a few corals, so several HO T5s with Individual reflectors would be nice.

Stand and Canopy. I will have John our Tile man/ Woodworker make the stand and canopy. I want the styling to mimic Elos, so both the stand and canopy will be very modern. Painted Black and White.

Let me know what you think, and please offer any suggestions or tips.
~Michael

Sounds like FUN to me!

I like the wider one (#2)! Gives them more separation in case of "disputes".

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Enough Time Wasted

Yeah, I need to edit the first, I meant 36" long X 24" wide X 30" tall.
And I said that I wanted to do T5 lighting. But, I think that I would like to go with MHs. Since the tank will be so deep I think that the MHs would take care of the corals. I have an idea on how to cover the tank. I can make a canopy about 6 inches tall. Put the screen halfway down, s0 3 inches above the water. The canopy will not have a top. Then use Pendants hanging from the ceiling. I will try to get a diagram of what this will look like. I have seen s few other tanks with this design, and it looked very modern.

Re: Enough Time Wasted

Another vote for longer tank.
I just put a second in my 48inch 90g. I'll let you know what happens. So far they are at exact opposite ends of the tank but I am not even sure they know the other exists.

Re: Enough Time Wasted

If space is an issue and I cant go over 36 inches long, do you think adding to the width will help?

Say 36 X 30 X 24 ?

Re: Enough Time Wasted

I think you need width and depth! Size does matter...in fact! LOL!

If I were building my own BSJF tank I would maximize X and Y in these rederings. Keep in mind that in nature they live on rubble flats at the reefs edge. So by maximizing the sustrate's surface area, as well as its depth, you'll have some happy BSs!

Re: Enough Time Wasted

Scott, that is exactly what I was planning. I am going to measure everything when I get off work. But I think that I am either going to go 36X30X24 or 48X30X24.
I will have to measure my space.

In this tank I will only have around 50 pounds of LR.

Re: Enough Time Wasted

I think rubble strewn across the bottom is what you'll need. I'd consider 6" or more of fine argonite mixed with some sand and possibly a 1" layer of rubble on top with patches, or islands if you will, of sand where the rubble has been pushed away.

Re: Enough Time Wasted

All this talk of rubble reminds me that I need to stop off at the LFS and get Spotty some more rubble for being a good fishy!

Thanks Blake. I am about to start measuring everything out. I have a few good Ideas that I will share later. Hopefully I can get all the Starfire ordered tomorrow.
