New BSJF on the way...Blue spott paradise??

Here are pics of the tank before and after. I ordered a BSJF and he should be here Tuesday, so I added 3 inches of sand and removed some live rock to add a little more sand area for the little fella. This is my 3rd so I want to give this little guy everything he needs.

Before

After

Not to sound like a broken record but be sure to have lots of rubble in various sizes. Mine uses pieces as big if not bigger than he is and got very upset (quit eating) when I was only prividing small rubble and crushed coral.
Good luck with you new baby and be sure to post pics on th ebuespot thread as well.

Thanks!! I added gravel on the front half of my tank (about 85% of the tank).

Thanks for the comment Klasikb!

Wow!!! That is an incredibly beautiful reef! I'm sure your BSJF will be ecstatic in your tank.

Yeah, looks like you've made quite a nice habitat for your new addition. Nice looking tank.

Re: New BSJF on the way...Blue spott paradise??

I agree that your reef is GORGEOUS! And congrats on the new BSJF.

My question is; when adding new sand/substrate to an established tank, is it okay to put in on the top, or are you supposed to mix it in, or leave parts of the old substrate exposed in some areas?

Keep in mind I'm Brand New and my tank is just getting set up, but I think I remember reading somewhere it's important to be cautious in how one adds new substrate into an existing system, mostly to preserve bacterial growth in the existing sand bed. I could definitely be wrong about this, though!

Thank you!! I think that the worse thing that you can do is stir up the old substrate in an established tank. I also do have the original substrate un covered behind all my rock. And once the BSJF gets to building his home he'll end up mixing it up anyways

Ah, okay! That makes perfect sense, especially about the new fishie mixing it up once he's there. LOL I guess I could've figured that one out had I thought a LITTLE bit harder.
:smck:

There is SO much to learn and then keep straight in this hobby. But thanks, you've helped my education a little bit!

I'll be watching for the new fish arrival!

Okay! I knew I read it somewhere here... give this a read, okay? I'd hate to see you have a problem if it can be avoided!

Adding Additional Substrate?
