This is wierd :(

So this morning I notice that my BSJF is not out like she always is. So I shine a light in her hole and I see that she is breathing weird, almost like she is panting, but slower. then shortly after my clown fish starts swimming very strange and ends up laying on its side then flopping around the tank. His color (the clown fish) is fading fast and he is breathing VERY hard. I have had that clow for 8 months and never a problem. Now the BSJF is out of her hole and leaning against the glass. She is breathing very slow and is not moving at all. I have not dosed, treated or anything. All I have done is ran my protein skimmer over night. They did eat Mysis soaked in garlic yesterday and they both ate today. I tested my water and all is good, my ph finaly went up to 8.0 and everything else tests fine. I don't know why I am having all this bad luck lately?!? Is there anything I can do? I did a 5 gallon water change today. I'm afraid they will both be dead my morning
Oh yeah the BSJF was very healthy till today.
Stefa

Re: This is wierd :(

weird is right! only thing that comes to mind is the skimmer, any chance of something in the air, cleaner, perfume, candle smoke, etc? skimmers pump nothing but air into your water and contaminants go with the air

Re: This is wierd :(

I had all the windows open today so it would have been fresh air. since yesterday this is what changed, new foam filter, new phosguard, new mysis, and ran skimmer. There were a lot of little bubbles in the tank, but not too bad. I havent ran the skimmer in a while.

Re: This is wierd :(

Could it be a decrease in dissolved O2? A change in pH from switching out Phosguard? I'm so sorry Stefan. Carbon is good and more WCs.

didnt run skimmer for a while. was skimmer full of water and not circulating? if so when you started it you pumped a load of sour water into the tank, do you know what you alc and calk levels are?

Re: This is wierd :(

It sound very much like low oxygen levels. Trying to increase the gas exchange with extra powerhead at the surface could help.

Re: This is wierd :(

I am with Sasquatch here. Dead water in skimmer produced Sulpher dioxide. Shut down a canister for a day and crack it open you will know what I mean. I am guessing here but lots of carbon and an air pump to improve the O2. I would not shut down the skimmer again unless you empty it before starting again. Hope the best for your critters.

Re: This is wierd :(

Do you have a cucumber or anything else that could have released a toxin?

Re: This is wierd :(

You had a window open, could anything toxic have come in from outside. Maybe a neighbor or gardener spraying close by.

Re: This is wierd :(

No cucumber in tank, or anything like that. Clown fish is dead by the way and BSJF doesnt look good either. The way the skimmer is in a red sea tank I dont think there could be dead water because even off the water has to flow through the skimmer. I didn't rinse the cup out before turning it on tho.

Re: This is wierd :(

What other fish do you have in the tank? How long have you had these fish. Does the Bluespot have patches of white on him?
Sorry for your loss of the clown. Hopefully the blue will hang on.
Meanwhile I would do lots of water changes, add carbon and change frequently and incerase oxygen. I would probably remove the new phosguard and new filter but keep the skimmer running. Ther is always the possibility that there was some type of cantaminant in one or the other.
