Plexiglass?

I am upgrading the lighting on my RSM(34) to T5's and am going to get a BSJF in the future so can I cover the top with plexiglass?

Here a pic of the tank for the heck of it...

Re: Plexiglass?

Should be ok at that distance. The heat wont affect it. Mesh would be better for gas exchange though.

Re: Plexiglass?

Bluespots can jump through eggcrate.

Can you drill several holes in the plexiglass?

Re: Plexiglass?

That's what I have. Window screen on top of the eggcrate around my lights has worked great so far. I have one hole in the top I need to cover since hubby made the top a bit small but so far it has worked great.

Re: Plexiglass?

Good looking tank SeahorseBT! Looks like a nice home for a BSJF. Already many good responses for the top. Just a couple of things to add with regards to the tank. It's hard to tell from the photgraph how deep the sand bed is, but you'll need a minimum of 3-4" of sand for your BSJF and some building rubble, 2-3 handfuls for starters. Also, the fungia upon the rockwork is a sure death sentence. They should be placed on the substrate for best longterm success. Keep us posted on your BSJF endeavor!

Re: Plexiglass?

Give them some large rubble as well. Mine got very mad when he only had small rubble and refused to eat until I gave him larger pieces.

Re: Plexiglass?

Thank about the advice, the sandbed is only 1-2 inches which I knew would be too shallow, but I will add some more in the near future.Should I get some larger grain sand to mix?And a sandbed that deep won't lock in nitrates will it?

Are you sure about the fungia? I have had it there for a month and it is always huge. I moved it when somebody else told me they do better in the sandbed and it didn't seem as happy.

Re: Plexiglass?

I wouldn't get larger grain sand. I would get the fine stuff 3-4 inches. I was talking about larger pieces of rubble not sand. They can move pieces larger than they are. Just give him a variety of rocks and shells and he will use what he wants. You may need to keep adding until he is done with his burrow. Leave some in there even after they are established since they sometimes decide to move even after their burrow is done.
These fish have a great personality but are very picky. The most important thing is to get a healthy eating one to begin with. If buying from a LFS make them feed it in front of you before buying.
