Re: BSJF in a 29? Pressing my luck.

Hi there 30X30 - Sorry for your problems. I would not feed live food (it can introduce diseases/parasites and may have already done that). As for the coughing, he is really just blowing food away. They blow food away so that it doesn't pollute the den. Many of mine that perished started blowing the food away that was offered instead of eating it. Some would put it in their mouth and spit it across the tank.

Be extremely careful not to overfeed (you can pollute your little tank quickly if he is not eating). I would resist the urge to try and fix this. The more you fuss, the more you might stress him. I would however try and do several WCs (in the least intrusive manner possible). Make sure WC water matches parameters (salinity, temp, pH) in the tank. I would also slowly start to lower the salinity and temp as much as possible. Bluezoo keeps their salinity and temp low when they house these guys. If I remember right it is between 1.015-1.018 salinity and 75-77 degrees (but you might ask them). The lower the salinity and temp, the easier it is for them to fight off problems. Stability of these parameters is also important, so if you can't stay at the 75-77 range throughout the day/night, then pick a higher target that you can keep stable.

Hope this helps and your Bluespot is bouncing around in no time!

Re: BSJF in a 29? Pressing my luck.

How quickly can I drop salinity? I assume that I have to bucket my corals. I didn't introduce live food until after the problem began and progressed, but the advice is heeded. I lost my fw discus years ago to a bad batch of blackworms. I didn't pound the tank with food, but just made sure it dropped within striking distance nothing more than the nassarius snails could clean up. He looks a gonner tonight, twisted in an uncomfortable way in his burrow and breathing heavy tonight, this is the first of that symptom. I was able to see the port late last night and there was a clear cast-like excrement.

Re: BSJF in a 29? Pressing my luck.

I pulled him out just to get a look, definately looked like a bowel obstruction. I put him into a 4:1 ratio FW:SW from my tank which came out to be about 1.008sg for approximately 7 minutes, and that caused some waste to be excreted. So I think i'm going to treat him the same way as many times as I think i can get away with tomorrow, based on if I can see a BM.

Do you see any improvement yet?

Wish I could offer more help. Keep in mind that each time you handle him, it adds stress so you really have to balance that with the benefit you are getting.

Re: BSJF in a 29? Pressing my luck.

You guys have the time line things went awry on 2/4, I figure if I get a meal into him within what maybe the next two days. I have no idea what damage has been done from the period of not eating, not being able to expel waste, and the possible osmotic damage from the FW dip.

He was still impacted and underwent a 10 minute fw swim again. I had to dismantle his burrow, and while i'm not partial to giving animals human qualities, I think in this case he's acting very human. If something peeled open my roof and plucked me from the sky, I'd think twice about returning home. He seems hellbent not to go back into the same burrow, the stress was much worse this time so I think we're finished with each other today, and seems interested in leaping for the first time.

Jumping is not a sign of happiness, but more a sign of stress. After all that he's been through his adrenline is probably sky high, just right for a jumping spree.

I hope he is doing better today!

Re: BSJF in a 29? Pressing my luck.

Unless he's foraging the bottom at night, and I don't know, its still not eating. I'm not feeding copious amounts of food but I only have snails to clean up. The closest he's come to eating is a piece of food hit him in the nose, and he wasn't thrilled. The slowly sinking ship....

Re: BSJF in a 29? Pressing my luck.

Last night I saw him looking worse than earlier in the day so i decided to take a look for myself. The same symptoms, severely swollen abdomen, and no intake of food. This evening it looks dismal, so I think this is over.
