| Over Achiever | Re: The Bluespot Club Here is the link to the site Woody got her yellow headed jawfish. http://sealifeinc.net/catalog/produc...roducts_id=152 I think this is what Lorraine is talking about. There is a bit about breeding. Mermaid, until we find an all inclusive article on jawfish breeding, you may have to piece together the research from the literature that is available. Or, you could do your own breeding research and publish a paper! That would be great! |

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: The Bluespot Club Dentoids link is working - yeah! Oops, nope this isn't the tank-raised link. Here is the permalink to Woody's post. The ones she got were tank raised and there was an article specifically about their breeding facility. Maybe if you e-mailed them they could provide it for you. ~Woody's 120 Escapade~

| Golden Moray ![]() | Re: The Bluespot Club Sealife Inc does sell captive bred yellow headed jawfish when they are available. The ones he sells are bred in Florida by Martin and Barbara Moe. It is a small scale operation so they aren't always available.

| Tunicate | Re: The Bluespot Club The Dark = Bad? Yay, so one week into it, things still look good. In fact, when both jawfish are out of their containers, they don't fight each other like they did on day one. But one thing I've come to observe, is that too much time with the lights off really stresses these guys. Whenever I would turn the lights off to let them sleep, I'd come back about 8 hours later, and one of the fish will look all beat up like he's been thrashing around. So I did a little experiment and rather than completely turn off the lights, I dimmed it real low and moved it away. I did it just enough so that they could still see a bit, but dark enough that it looked like they could still get some sleep. Anyways, I come back a few hours later, and the fish seem a whole lot calmer. Maybe if its dark for too long, they'll think their burrow has caved in, and its some sort of survival instinct to escape, so they thrash around. I haven't been doing it too long, but I'll continue testing it out the next few days. |

| Over Achiever | Re: The Bluespot Club Interesting theory. I know that they are stimulated to jump when the lights go off. Perhaps it is the momentary blackness, before their eyes adjust to the darkness, that stimulates them to jump. Again, like their burrow has caved in on them. Nice theory! To bad you can't set up a video camera to watch them. |

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: The Bluespot Club Soulbabel - I'm glad your two aren't fighting! Not sure on the lighting issue. I'm trying to remember. Jaws 2 was in the dark a lot. Mrs. QT has a light side of the tank and a dark side. She hangs out on the darker side. Mr 50 just puts on his night cap and goes to bed. I have to wake him up in the morning. He knows when the lights come on it is time to take off his top and come and eat breakfast. It's too cute. Mine haven't done this before. He is soo at home! Anyone have any suggestions on the tail/fin issue? Could it be related to the FW/M Blue dip process? I don't remember seeing this on them at the store, but I suppose it could have been missed. Both of them are eating. Mr. 50 eats more aggressively than Mrs. QT.

| Over Achiever | Re: The Bluespot Club I've gotta hand it to you Lorraine, doing your observations and keeping Ms. QT without any substrate. I know that must be hard on you. It's kind of like keeping a groundhog in a glass case without any earth. That's got to be stressful. Anyway, I hope it gives some good data for future BS owners. Do they both have shreaded tail fins? |

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: The Bluespot Club Yes, it is very hard! You can see the tail problem on both of them if you look real close at the photos, but you have to ignore the dirty spots on the glass: Mr. 50 Mrs. QT I haven't been able to get a good look at either of them today to check for improvement. They are both still eating and based on the last quick glances they offered me I would say they are no worse but not improved either. Mr. 50 puts on his night cap each night and continues to collect all the sand during the day for his den. I guess I don't have enough in there, 'cause he darts across the tank, grabs a mouthful, and then darts home again. Mrs. QT hangs out under the heater (so much for the theory that they prefer cooler temps). The plastic container is in front of it so I guess it has offered at least some benefit to reducing her stress level. As for lighting, Mr. 50 is under 150w MH for 6-7 hours a day, both white/blue lunar lights the rest of the daytime, and just blues throughout the night. Mrs. QT gets about 12 hours a day pc lighting (I think it is an 18w Current fixture) and no lunar lights. Mr. 50 is obviously more comfortable, hangs out in the front of the tank looking at everything. Mrs. QT really hasn't complained about her situation the past few days (oops I spilled a bit of sand out of the container so she doesn't have to sit on the glass), but she doesn't come out at all, except when I put food in the tank she will reach around the corner for it, then go to the back of the container where the current takes the leftovers for more.

| Tunicate | Re: The Bluespot Club In regaurds to temp and lighting. when I had mine. they were in a 120 box with 440wh vho for 15hrs and 800wt metal halide for 8hs so 8 hrs of 1240wt light. and tank temp around 78-79. both would put their night caps on when going to bed... |
