| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Re: The Bluespot Club I am so sorry for your loss Lorraine Sorry for my lack of response too... I haven't checked this thread since my last post here and didn't realize you were having issues with #2. ![]() Kudos to you for attempting to cure him!! I've used metronidazole many times successfully in the past with no losses so I am not sure what went wrong with #2's treatment. He apparently had other issues. One of which could have been cyanide poisoining? Again, I am very sorry for your loss but you did the best you could to save him.

| Over Achiever | Re: The Bluespot Club Craig, all of the literature I have read indicates that this species is not caught with cyanide because they are easy to collect without. However, one of the symptoms that has been noted repeatidly is that they stop eating, then perish shortly thereafter which, as you know, is a symptom of cyanide poisoning. Perhaps they are now being caught with cyanide? We just don't know the collectors or their pratices! If I were an unscrupulous collector, I would want to get the biggest bang for my cyanide buck. I would dose an entire coral head and get the multiple fish that float out. It wouldn't be lucrative for me to swim around the sea floor looking for BS then dose them in their burrow and dig them out. There is a limited amount of time a diver can stay down. I would think they would want to get their bounty and get back to the surface. On the other hand, maybe this is the reason for the high cost. Limited supply, high demand! We just don't know. |

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: The Bluespot Club I've had this guy for over two months, I don't think it was cyanide. The metronidozole did perk him up the first few days, the third day he was laying on his side most the time, the 4th day he looked dead so I aborted the treatment. The FW dip and 100% WC the following day perked him up again for about a day. I think if I had treated him sooner, he would have been ok. He was already so weak from not eating when I started, he didn't have much of a chance. He really ate next to nothing for over two months! Upon death, I examined him. He had about a 1 inch strand of white stuff hanging out of him at that time. His death is attributed to the fact that I put him in a stressful situation from the beginning (in with another BSJF) and could not diagnose his problem, and therefore didn't treat him when I should have. In the future I will be treating new arrivals with a FW/Formalin dip. I didn't before because I thought that it would stress them more than help. After seeing him handle it so well in a weakened state, I would not hesitate with a new arrival. I will probably try a Dusky or Tiger for the display first, then try a BS in the 50in September (which in theory is the best time to collect them, because of cooler temps in transport, etc.). However, if Diver's Den gets another one, it will be hard to pass up! Michael's avatar makes me miss them too much! Maybe I can print it out and tape it to the tank!

| Angel Girl's Daddy ![]() | Re: The Bluespot Club I have not checked this thread in a long time since i lost my BSJF. Sorry for your loss Lorraine ![]() If it eases your mind a bit i don't think the metronidozole had anything to do with it. It does not bind well with foods and is for use in the water. They have another product out with metronidozole in it called focus made to bind to wet food and help get the product into the animal your treating. You did not say how you were treating that i read, so i assume you were trying to soak it in the food.

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: The Bluespot Club Thanks Frankie! I don't feel that treating him with the metronidozole caused his death at all. After the first few weeks without eating, every day I looked in his tank I expected to find a dead fish. He was very sick for a very long time. You are right Lynn, adding it to food would have been pointless. It was a water treatment. I'm glad you both are stopping by once in a while, we enjoy your visits here!
