Re: The Bluespot Club

Lynn - I personally wouldn't tear anything down. If he isn't showing himself it is because he is healing. If you disturb him you will stress him more.

Woody - I missed your photos - of course Chiquita is still adorable!

Scott - thanks for the post on the book. Seems like pretty straightforward info.

Nervoustime, Lisa, Frankie, Lynn - Can you tell me where you got your Bluespot from? I'm trying to keep track of this to see if it makes a difference on survival.

Anyone - What else is needed on the front page news? If you think of anything you can PM me.

I'm also looking for advice on my future Bluespot. It will be in QT when I get it. How do you think I should set that up for him? Shallow sandbed, PVC pipe... Any treatments or just watch him?

Re: The Bluespot Club

I got my blue from reefhotspot.com and was very pleased. I ordered a number of fish including the blue as well as a WYSIWYG frogspawn. EVerything was great. Much larger fish than I have ever gotten online before. Very good packaging. Everything came in 5 bags. A tripple bag that was tightly sealed inside a double bag that was tightly sealed. All packed nicely into a cooler. The outside of the box was even marked live fish so the Fedex driver knew what she was delivering and she took extra care of the box because she knew. I was pleased enough with the experience that I sent them an email asking them to become an RS sponsor. They said they will check out the site this week. I hope they do. They also have a 14day arrive alive guarantee like liveaquaria.

Do you really think I should just leave it? Not knowing where he is is driving me crazy. There are no new piles of CC in the reef. I am terribly afraid he didn't make it. When we pulled him out of the overflow he went to the bottom of the tank and just sat there for over an hour. Then he moved just a bit to some cover in the rocks but not a burrow like usual. The next morning he was nowhere to be found. My rockwork is pretty open with the 3 sided tank and I just can't find him anywhere. If I saw signs of digging I would be fine. But without those I am very concerned.

As to your future blue, I would definitely put sand and rock rubble in the qt. These fish really seem to need to dig to be happy. I don't think I would treat him unless there is some sign of disease. I would just use the time to watch him closely but then again I am certainly no QT expert.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Lynn, what lfs did you get your other one from? Lisa, report on both of yours too.

Well, I wouldn't bother him. If he used all his energy to get him a hideout and you disturb it, he will have to exert more to find another place and would definitely be stressed more by the situation. Did you check your ammonia? If he died, it might spike. If your ammonia isn't spiking, then why rummage through everything. I would definitely check outside the tank, in the pony tank, and in the overflow again, even if you already have. Hanging out at the bottom of the tank for an hour or so is not that big a deal. He was just thinking - how can I do that again it was fun (hehe)! Hope he shows up.

Re: The Bluespot Club

I purchased mine from a store close to my house. They are located in Irvine, California. The name of the store is Coral Oasis. There seems to be quite a few locations near me that are carrying the Bluespot lately. Coral Oasis always has a large selection of fish at very reasonable prices. After I picked up mine, he has another one at this store.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Teh LFS where I got Number two is my usual LFS The Coral Palace. He special ordered him though from his wholesaler in Tampa. He was only in the shop for about 24hrs and I think that was at least part of the problem. I should have either gotten him right away and had him not go into the lfs tank or should have waited a week or so before moving him again. I really blame number 2s demise on transport stress.

I really really hope you are right about Number 1. I have certainly not given up hope since he is a fat apparently healthy fish. He should be able to stand a couple of days without food while he hides and recovers if that is what he is doing. I have looked in both overflows, the floor, etc and will do so again. Frank even took most of the plumbing apart last night. Apparently he wanted to swap out a pump so he took the opportunity to check inside the pipes in case he went through the overflow. Also checking the fuge and the sump since once a fish did take the entire trip down the overflow. No sign there and the DSB in the fuge is undisturbed.
I will test the parameters tonight. I was thinking the same thing. He is a big enough fish that I should get at least a small spike if something hapoened to him. Hopefully I will get the usual 0 result. That would make me have a bit more hope at least.

Re: The Bluespot Club

I hope you find him! Kudos to Frank for being concerned enough to check the plumbing!!!

Thank you for posting the info Scott

There's a very drastic difference between these temp., the question is do they do better in the cooler water or warmer water ?
Now it mentions Juveniles are found in shallower water but as adults they tend to go into deeper water, is it because of the temperature ? That is the question to be or not to be

Hope you find yours ok Lynn !

Re: The Bluespot Club

Lynn I really don't think him going into the overflow is going to cause him enough stress to cause death. Remember, mine jumped out of the tank and hit the hard, cold slate floor, from 5 feet, with no untoward effects. As for the food thing, when he gets hungry he'll come out, like Frankie's did. Keep your spirits high! The surprise is almost here!

Re: The Bluespot Club

Sorry to say, but Number 1 is no longer with us. Frank found him when he got home from work today. He was really stressed out from the overflow incident so I honestly believe it was the stress that did him in. To all appearances he was a nice healthy fish. Good weight and none of the white blotches I have read about. Unfortunately this will be my last one for a while. I just get too upset when I lose a fish and I have now lost 2 of these guys. They are just too awesome for me to attempt agaiin right now. Maybe over the summer I will get another, but for now I guess I need to move to the inactive list.
Sorry to have bad news to report but I figured you guys would want to know.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Thanks.
I think I am going to take it easy for a while and just enjoy the reef as it is. No more purchases for a while. Then we will see. I started getting paranoid about the blue after Woodstock's Diesel was picking on hers since I have a Chevron as well. I never saw the Chevron bug the blue but it may have down the road. It really stinks to loose such a fish like this. He was doing so well and I was so thrilled. Then just like many other people he found the one small hole in the eggcrate and that was it.
Maybe next time I will try one in the pony tank. It should be easier for me to cover that super thoroughly. No light demanding stuff so if I cut back on the light with my cover it is no problem and I don't have a bunch of pipes etc to work around. Actually on that tank I could even do a glass top without a problem. Then it really couldn't get out.
