Re: The Bluespot Club

I feel like this thread should be about awareness, husbandry practice and experience (with a little fun on the side) of this beautiful fish. As Mike pointed out there is not a lot of research on these fish, mainly just other peoples experiences. Perhaps we'll start a discussion across the hobby about the BSJF!

While I was doing my Google search on the BSJF, I came across this thread, Doni's Reef Space thread et al. Hopefully others doing research will see our discussion!

Re: The Bluespot Club

I love the thought that our keeping of these beautiful fish might help others to better keep them healthy and happy. Hopefully we can find the right way to keep them. If not we can at least document our experiences and hopefully learn.
I'll have to admit that when I came home to find that mine had moved I got nervous remembering Lorraine's stories. He is still new so it is reasonable that he is checking out a few places in the reef, but I remembered that hers always moved a lot before she lost them.
I was very pleased to read that in the wild they are in wide open areas instead of in the rocks. Mine just made a new home up against the glass in the reef. He dug out quite a deep hole that is completely open on the top and he has a great view of anything on that side of the reef. It is almost exactly in the center of the tank so he can look 3 feet in one direction and 3 feet in the other. Hopefully this is good. I half expect him to move again tomorrow and I may just put the screen back up for a day or two to guarantee no escape.

Good idea Lynn. I would want to be sure your bluespot is very settled before removing...

Look's like Lynn has been training her BS - sit and stare at him, then tell him he is pretty, and like my doggies offer him treats - they will do anything for you! Mine usually did very well against the glass. Remember, they can (and will) move or jump at any time. Do you have a way to do something similar to what Doni and I have setup? I'm sending some of my Pond netting to Dentoid to try out with the eggcrate and MHs, he will hopefully report on how it works as well. I am happy with my gutter guard panel across the back and will probably stick to that.

Re: The Bluespot Club

The way my tank is set up I really can't do the gutter guard like you guys. I have eggcrate covering the top and I had screeen over that for the first couple of days. So far I haven't seen him jump at all except during acclimation, but I know that as soon as somebody startles him he certainly may jump.
BTW He is still in his strange home this morning so I guess he likes it there. I'll put up some pictures during lunch so you guys can see what I am talking about. He is so gorgeous, I do love the fact that I can see him completely in this home.

Re: The Bluespot Club

That's too bad. We need to develop a BS monitor so an alarm goes off when he jumps.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Good idea Lorraine! Perhaps a roving, robot to gently pick up the fish and return it to the tank.
For those times when we are not there!

I think that should be the challenge for Woody's Aquacontroller - program away Woody!

Doing some searches for corals and found blue spots on sale

exoticfish.com - Jeff's Exotic Fish. The best source for corals, live rock, fish, metal halides, and all reef aquarium supplies.

That's where Dentoid got his from. He had a good service/experience with them.

Re: The Bluespot Club

I was pleasantly surprised for my first on-line livestock pruchase from Jeff's Exotic Fish. I would recommend them and that's a good price! They usually sell them for $149.00. They must have a school of them!

I forgot to put pics up at lunch. Here is one to hold you until I have more time.
Yes this is his new home. Very strange in my opinion, but he seems happy there and hasn't moved yet.
