Nice! He looks really happy Make sure you get some bigger bits in there for him to build with, though.

Oh yeah, I made sure to get him a variety of sizes. I went down the row of crushed coral bins at the LFS and got a little bit of each size from as small as a large sewing pin head up to about the size of a hot tamale candy. Is that a good enough range or does he need some BIG pieces? I'd love any advice that would give him a better home.

So far I've got egg crate under the sand as a base for the LR so he can burrow to his heart's content, the rubble that I mentioned, and I've sealed the open back section of the canopy with egg crate and gutter guard zip tied to that so he can't jump out. Oh, and I covered the overflow with gutter guard as well.

Anything else I should do?
Thanks.

Larger rubble when you have a chance! I use pieces of tonga branch, clam shells...

Glad you got your top secured.

No kidding, larger? I've got some larger rubble in my sump.I had no idea they used really big pieces. I can't wait to see him move them around. About how big of pieces should I give him?

Re: The Bluespot Club

Both of my Jawfish have no problem moving empy snail shells. Both of the guys have used snail shells to build their little house. Try a few bigger pieces, and you will be shocked to see them move it.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Very nice lookin' Blue Justin. My blue actually moved a large turbo snail that was getting too close to his burrow!

On a side note, Yesterday I was at my LFS picking up some supplies. I asked the owner if it would be O.K. if I could get some LR rubble, for my Blue Spot. I bought him from this dealer btw. He says sure, hands me a bag and tells me to look in his storage bin where he keeps his big pieces of live rock he sells. I pick up a few pieces and some "dead" coral fragments.

When I get home I noticed 1 of the fragments looked like it still had some life to it. It is a green candy cane and looks like it had about 7 heads. Most of the heads looked lifeless , but 1 head looked kind of puffy. So I put it in my tank and fed it some brine shrimp. To my surprise, it ate it right away and I saw tentacles on it! The other heads are still showing quite a bit of green color. My question is, will these come back? While they are showing a lot of skeleton, they still show a lot of color! Could the color I'm seeing be tissue? Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: The Bluespot Club

If it is feeding, showing tentacles, and green, I think it will come back. Strontium, iodine...

Look at my last pics. There is a flat rock in front of BJ's place. He moved it there!

Re: The Bluespot Club

Anything is possible with the candy cane. Give it a chance and it just may.
Beautiful blue? Is he out like that all the time? When mine was new he pretty much stayed in his burrow. Now that he feels at home he can be found anywhere in the tank.
You would be amazed at the size of rubble they will move. I have seeen mine move pieces larger that he is. He also has covered all but the door with sand so it looks like a sand mound but I know the huge abount of rock he has in there. Keep givine him rubble. I kept putting it in until he quit using it and then left some more there for future use. If that disappears I will add more.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Thanks for the compliments on my new little guy everyone, I can't believe I waited this long to get one. I was just telling my wife that it would be cool to have a dedicated tank for a Blue Spot designed specifically for their needs.

For the first 24 hours he was searching for a home so I saw him all over the tank. That's how I got the shots of him out in the open sand. He made 2 or 3 burrows before he settled in one on the side of the tank about half way back Now he's always in his burrow with his head sticking out. I think he's still getting used to all the attention we're giving him and all the attention his very friendly and curious tank-mates are giving him as well. The clown pair keep swimming up to him to check him out. I think I'll go the the LFS today to get a bit more sand for the front of the tank . My sand bed slops down from the back to the front so I think that may be why he didn't make a burrow in the front, the sand is more shallow there. I'll also have to break up some LR to get some larger pieces for Bubbles to fortify his little burrow.

How awesome! Sounds like bubbles is going to be very happy in his new home. Once mine became comfortable he spends more and more time in the open. My favorite thing though is saying good morning. As soon as I turn on the light he pops his little head out to say good mornig.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Just got a new camera (Sony DSLR-A700, they were blowing it at Best Buy) which I'm still learning how to use. I got a decent picture of Jasper, and you can also see Jorja in the background though she's out of focus. Jasper has been been in the tank for six months now, Jorja a little less. Still not sure if they are two females or a male and female, but they are usually not too far apart and never have had a major fight. They each have very distinct personalities, and play a lot of games like swapping burrows randomly. Having a pair is a lot of fun!

It wasn't easy getting a BSJF to feel comfortable in this tank which now has over 40 fish, including four tangs and about a dozen wrasses. But he has adapted well and can usually be found hovering over his burrow, waiting for plankton to drift by. He also likes Arctic Pods and New Life Spectrum pellet food. But he will wait until food floats by, he doesn't venture far. Jorja on the other hand loves silversides, and will dart all the way across the tank to nab a piece and will eat it out of my hand too. I feel silversides to the rose bubble tip anemone and dwarf fuzzy lionfish, she can easily eat a piece as big as the lionfish!

Has anyone attempted to keep more than two BSJF in a large tank ????

PS -- you can see the full size photo, and some other tank pics from the new camera, at
