Here's a video of Jasper. He's been busy digging burrows... and defending them from the evil tangs, wrasses, and rabbitfish!

Re: The Bluespot Club

Just joined this board and wanted to say HI! It was my interest in acquiring a BSJ that brought me here. I Googled (is that a word?) blue spot jawfish and came upon your "club"!

My LFS has 3 of them in stock, and with Christmas around the corner, I may be getting a gift certificate to this LFS. Especially after I put out some"hints" on what to get Dad for Christmas! And what better way to use it!!?

I presently have a 29 gallon Biocube that I have going on 15 months. Presently the only fish I have is a pair of Picasso clownfish. I've been wanting to add another fish to the tank and after doing some research, I have decided to try a BSJ. I know there are challenges involved in keeping them, so I hope to gain as much knowledge about them as I can and rely on you for help and suggestions.

Right now my main concern is the proper substrate depth. I only have around 1 1/2", so I guess I'll have to add some more to it. I do have some fairly large pieces of LR. Will shells used for hermit crabs work? Believe it or not, I bought a bag of about 100 or so for some hermits to grow in to. Do I crush these? Any ideas or help is appreciated.

Take Care Basser1

Anyone have any success in pairing up a blue-spot and getting any spawning?

Re: The Bluespot Club

I would break up the hermit shells unless they are pretty small. Bluespots do use larger pieces but the only time I have seen them use entire shells is rather small ones like nassarius snails etc. In fact there are reports of them using the actual snails and small hermits in building their den. Not very smart since their building material walks away. The one thing you want to be absolutely sure of is the top of the tank. These guys are incredible jumpers who can get through amazingly small openings. I think over half of the losses in the club are due to jumping out of the tank or injuries aquired by trying to jump out of the tank.
120gallons. I have not heard of anyone successfully breeding this fish. I believe Heinz is going to try but no reports of success yet unless I missed them.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Welcome!

I would not crush up the hermit shells. They use the big ones too. I have seen them drag them clear across the tank.

saltwaterfish had a post showing a pair with the male flashing. No babies (I think they both jumped out of the tank).

Re: The Bluespot Club

I am going to be getting another BSJF when I get my 240 up and running. Megan Is getting one for her new tank. I also hope to setup a dedicated BSJF tank once my 240 is up and runiing. I figure between 5 BSJF I should have at least one male and one female.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Basser1, welcome.

I believe 29 gallons is too small for a BSJF as the tank would be too shallow for for jumoing behavior.

Really? A lot of the web-sites say minimum tank size should be 30 gallons. I realize I'm at the minimum but can I do it? If not, I may have to re-think it.

Re: The Bluespot Club

What is the depth of your tank? If you have a 29 gallon tall. Then MAYBE you could do it. But That would be the only fish I would keep. I would really think about what you want to do with the tank. To be honest I would not get a BSJF in a 30 gallon regular.

Re: The Bluespot Club

I just read your post. I would not put a BSJF in a bio-cube. They are already shallow, and by the time you add the adequate depth of sand, you woudl have very low water volume, and not much depth. Sorry, I am not meaning to burst your bubble, but we all want whats best for our fish.

You may be right! I was wondering the same thing about the tank depth after I added more sand to it. Plus I do want what's best for the fish, that's why the "Tang Police" won't be after me, in this case I guess it would be the "BSJF Police"!
