Re: The Bluespot Club

I must have had some different type because I, with my own two eyes, observed as they ate a frag of blue xenia that wasn't doing so well. I haven't had any bad experiences with blue legs yet.

Re: The Bluespot Club

There are red hermit crabs mis-identified as Scarlets. The distinctive yellow eye stalk is the key. If the xenia was dying then that might explain the scavenger response.

Re: The Bluespot Club

In any case is it better to just do snails and forget about hermits? Or should hermits be used in combination with snails for a better cleanup crew? I am also thinking of a couple of skunk shrimp once I do away with my coral banded shrimp. I love looking at my coral banded shrimp(Slinky), but he really does not added any advantageous services to the tank. If anything he just steals food from my corals when I'm feeding. I am also unsure if he will be a problem to my Harry.

Re: The Bluespot Club

I had great success with a combination of Astrea snails, Nassaurius snails, Red Scarlet Hermits, Skunk Cleaner shrimp, and a fighting Conch.

Re: The Bluespot Club

I will see about the scarlets vs the blue, because my larger snails always get killed off. My LFS will usually just trade mine out for other ones. I will have to make sure they have yellow eyes. The tricky part is getting them out of my tank.

Re: The Bluespot Club

Dentoid and Lorraine and all you other bluespot junkies, I just want you to know I walked by 3 Bluespots today for $84.00 each. That was the longest walk in my life. 1 looked very good, 1 looked o.k couldn't see all of him and the other one all I saw was the tip of his tail. Fishplanet was nice enough to give them each their own tank alone with sand and a rock to burrow under.

The last LFS I went to had 1 in really bad shape breathing hard and in a big community bare bottom tank. I really wanted to rescue him, but I know enough from this thread to save my money. Still sad though.

If Gary the goby ever dies of Natural Causes (Dent) then a Bluespot it will be.
But till then I wait, watch and learn.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Wow a real modicum of restraint!

Re: The Bluespot Club

Yep, Dotty was with me 6 months and was healthy. She either jumped out when I left the anti-jump net ajar or she got eaten by my flower anemone. One night she was there the next morning she was gone. Do not under estimate their escape abilities.

Victor, your restraint is overwhelming. Wimp!

Re: The Bluespot Club

Well, on a lesser note of deceased BSs(I hate talking about death). My Harry has finally stepped out towards the front of the tank. I snapped these 2 pictures. He semed pretty calm as I was about 2 feet away from him and he just kept an eye on me.

I have never really seen how they act, but mine is breathing a bit heavy not sure may just be me and I guess he is eating zooplankton or something because he does a fast bitting motion as he shoots upwards. I will try to post a vid of his breathing. I have uploaded it to host it, just waiting for approval from the site.

Heh...had to edit this. Just noticed I said I would change the subject about death and then, ironically, I post about my Harry breathing heavily.

Re: The Bluespot Club

What you describe is pretty normal for the first week or two. One thing I have learned is not to try so hard. It's like the harder you try to get a kid to eat something, the more they fight with you about it.

PS - He looks very happy in the pics!

Re: The Bluespot Club

I hope he is alright! How is the flow in your tank? Possibly an oxygen issue.
