| Social Darwinism victim | OMG I'm more confused now... TOO MUCH info... I'm overwhelmed. I read Travis' sticky on what to look for when you're interested in photos of the tank... and I'm pretty sure all that info pertains to Disney World and birthday cameras too. Can someone point me to a "cameras for dummies" link? Or how about this... I'm looking in the $400 to $600 with those features on the sticky (macro, etc.) Hubby likes Nikons because his buddy who just has too much time to research this stuff loves his Nikon. No idea what kind. I know megapixels increase clarity, and Mike's into his HD stuff with the TV so a very high resolution is desirable. (He wants to see hair growing.) Can anyone with a camera in that range offer advice?

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: OMG I'm more confused now... I have a great Cannon at home that was in that price range. I forget what model but we got the camera and an accessory kit with several lenses, filters, and other goodies for about that price a year ago. You could probably even get the next model up for the same price now. I will look at home and see exactly what kind it is. A few nice features about mine is that it has a macro and a super macro and has a 12X optical zoom and no digital zoom.

| Manta Ray | Re: OMG I'm more confused now... i think you will like this, its info on taking pic not so much on the camera. Aquarium Photograpy on the camera do you want an SLR function? i would get a DSLR for sure, i dont have one now but next camera buy will be. like tippMANn98 suggested look into nikons D40 or better yet D80. many people i know that have the D70 love it. but the bang for you buck, if you can find one, is the nikons D50, they were supposed to stop productioin of them in mid 2007. i dont know if they did but if so try to get one before they are gone, they used to go for around $800.00 with lens. might be able to get a deal on one if they among the last, clearance sales so i suggest 1st D50-should be able to get a great deal. best bang for you buck for sure. 2nd D70 or D80 if you want/can spend the extra $$, IMO worth it. 3rd D40 fits your needs and priced right. but might out grow it soon or be able to get the D50 for the same price or less.

| Elegance coral | Re: OMG I'm more confused now... "A second guideline for taking aquarium pictures deals specifically with taking pictures of fishes. When displaying a picture of a fish it is proper to take a picture of the left side of the fish. In other words, the fish is facing left. This isn’t always possible, and in general a picture of a fish facing right can be flipped and mirror image is used. There are of course exceptions to this rule including: never flip a picture that has a human in the photo, never flip a picture of a non-bilaterally symmetric fish (i.e. flounders), and internal dissection pictures are taken on the right sides of the fishes." Why? I don't understand this part. What difference does it make?

| Social Darwinism victim | Re: OMG I'm more confused now... You know, it's ironic, I cropped, resized and color and BW corrected photos when I worked for the newspaper. I even took a few decent ones for publication with the idiot-proof camera, but I have no idea how to work one of the good ones, the mostly-still-manual-with-digital-thrown-in-for-good-measure ones that the photogs use!! and my sister in law's a photographer, went to one of the best schools. shame on me.

| Social Darwinism victim | Re: OMG I'm more confused now... yeah, I was one of those students the nuns said was not "living up to my potential..." Prow, I think Mike's buddy has that 70. He was over playing with it and taking tank pics a while ago and mike was drooling. and on the "nat'l geographic" instructions on fish photography, there's actually "rules" that most (I think) photogs follow about where things "go" in photos. Visual focus for people seems to run towards the right kinda towards the bottom, stuff like that. That sound like one of those. As far as newspapers, the general consensus among "purists" is that a photo is a visual record of the event photographed, and if you mess with it you are messing with a record of history. There are people who go far with this, not even correcting for color or cropping at all -- making the pic visually appealing doesn't matter.
