| Midas Blenny | Just to clarify what has been posted, you can resize the image in Photoshop as well. You are much better off taking the picture at maximum resolution..that way you can also crop out the parts you don't want from the image and still end up with a pioture at your target resolution.

| Contributing Member ![]() | Not being critical....but did you use a tripod? IMO, that picture will not attain a sharp crisp look...more sharpening will simply make it grainier (I think I just made that word up ) and increase the noise in the pic. When using the high pass sharpening, it is very rare that I go higher than 30%, but I tend to prefer a slightly softer pic. Then unshrp mask...I tend to use the default settings in photoshop, with the actions...I use it at whatever settings Travis had it set to when he posted the zip file ![]() |

| Smilie Bartender ![]() | Thanks Dingo! Traip, that pic looks more like it has resizing/jpeg artifacting ussues. It very well could have some focus/camera shake issues as well, but the digital issues are bad enough I'm not sure what else is wrong, if anything. One thing you do NOT want to do is keep resaving pics as JPEGS. Every time you do, you lose image quality. By the 4th time or so, it becomes very noticeable even to the untrained eye. Instead, save your working files as a TIFF or PSD. They are "lossless" saving methods, so no image quality is lost when saving. Then, when you're finished with the pic, save it as a JPEG for posting. | Fire Coral | Travis thanks for the great thread. I couldn't wait to try this stuff out when I read it. Finally got the chance to do it and here are some results: Before: After: Before: ![]() After: ![]() These were taken with my Canon S40 in the maximum resolution using the aperture priority mode (my favorite mode). I found that hardest part was using the healing brush. It didn't always get the results I expected. I also found that selecting "soft light" on the background copy created by the "high pass" option help reduce the noise caused. I lost a little vibrancy from it but the noise was too hard to look at without the change. Thanks again Travis. Your pics are just amazing by the way.

| Smilie Bartender ![]() | Thanks UCLASnerd, and looking good! Check out this PS seminar I did on selective sharpening- it's the most advanced seminar I've done, but the technique works excellent once you get it down... and it's really not that hard. Photoshop seminar 3- selective sharpening I wish I could do a seminar on the healing brush, but there's really no way to show people the technique without doing it real-time. A couple hints- definitely use a smaller brush size, whatever size is just large enough to cover the blemish you're healing out. Also, when trying to heal something near an edge- say, the outline of the fish- try actually alt-clicking with part of the brush on the edge of the fish. That will help cut down on the "volcano of color" effect you'll get sometimes when trying to heal near an edge. HTH. Travis |
