I would definitely add an extra battery. I have found that to be an extremely useful "accessory". It takes 2-3 hours to charge the battery, and you aren't always in the position that you want to wait. Always having a charged battery available is well worth the extra cost, IMO.

There is an awesome 6-page review on this cam here: >Steve's Digicams, Nikon 5700<

If you decide to buy the camera, I would strongly recommend this book: A Short Course in Nikon Coolpix 5700 Photography (Book & CD-ROM)<. I own the one for the 995, and it proved invaluable to me.

Be very careful with purchasing a digicam online. There are many reputable etailers out there, but many (mostly the NYC import shops) deal in gray-market cameras. Do your research.

I bought mine through Dell -- reputable, plus you can usually find a discount/coupon code to apply to your purchase along with the camera rebate.

If you go through >this link at Dell<, you get 10% off, and free shipping. So, your total cost would be $810.00 delivered, then you get the $100.00 rebate, so $710.00. Wow, that's tempting.

I'll vouch for Newegg.com. I've bought countless things from them and have never had a problem. I'll be giving butterflyphoto a look as well. I like the Nikon BTW.

OK gang here is what I will be ordering.
http://www.butterflyphoto.com/viewitem.php?IndexID=2262
I will also get the pro kit for it
· 512MB Memory Card
· Deluxe Case
· EN-EL1 Li-ION Battery
· Universal Battery Charger
· Lens Maintenance Kit

I should be good for a little while with all this.
I just tried to call in the order and the sales group closed early to prepare for a blowout sale tomorrow from 6-9PM (EST I assume since they are in NY)
So I will call during the sale time
If the sale prices are nice I will go for a lens or 2
The guy at the local camera shop wanted $899 just for the camera
He was telling me I would need to get a ring coupler to add lenses to this camera???
Can anyone recommend what would be a good general lens to look for? Or a nice macro lens?
Thanks again
S

Wow, Sharks! What a great deal at $569.

Really makes you think about going full Digital SLR instead of $329 for an SLR-like camera. For just an additional $240 makes you think long and hard. Congrats and we'll look forward to seeing your great new photos!

Tanks Sharks! Glad I could help out in any way to save a buck to spend on the reef instead! Now if we could just fly to Robie's so he could coach us and maybe snag a few frag's out of his tank while we're there!

Sharks, that cam is gonna be ready to use, with superior macro capabilities...right out of the box. With 8X optical zoom...I really can't see you needing any telephoto lenses for tank photography. If I were getting accessories for my cam I would look into an external flash and maybe a flash bracket.

Thanks for the idea Kev
If I need no lens I will price out a flash.
I was going to get a tri-pod locally. Due to size I figure it would save me in shipping charges. Plus I want to see it first.
I’m sooo siked and I hope this super sale their answering machine mentioned will save me some more.

Great idea Mary

Ok I just ordered the camera and the pro kit.
I don’t have the camera yet and I have more questions already
The sales guy recommended I extend the warrantee from 1 to 5 years for $99 now, or it will cost $149 later.
Also he suggested I get the …

58MM SUPER HIGH RESOLUTION FILTER KIT
UV: filter protects your camera's lens from scratches. Fluorescent: filter provides the perfect solution for obtaining pleasing skin tones. Polarizer: Polarizers let you deepen and intensify blue skies, achieve vibrant color saturation.
For $149 now or it will be $199 later.

Do I need to extend the warrantee? Do they break often?
And what about these filters?
Was he just trying to generate more sales?
The order won’t ship until Monday so I can add to the order if I want to and I will still get the savings.
TIA again
S

Also the super sale did nothing for me
It was on plasma TV’s and PC peripherals.
But hey I got a great deal to begin with

Yes he's trying to generate more sales, the only thing I would get would be UV Filter to protect the lense, the extended warranty is up to you I didn't get it. I've had bad experinces with extended warrantee's on other products. I look at it like this if there's a defect with the camera you'll know about it in the first year but if you want peace of mind then get it JMHO

I don't think they break often...but if it breaks at a year and a day and you didn't buy it...you'll be sorry. I purchased an extended warranty for my 995 and everytime I drop it (happened about 3 times in the last 2 years, I'm glad I got it. Of course I've only had it 2 years and I'm already itching to upgrade.

I would go for the UV and the polarizing filter, the UV filter will preserve your lens and the polarizing filter is said to help the glare on the top down shots.

Yes, but that is not always a bad thing for you.

Thanks guys I will think over the extended warrantee.
Probably will get it since 5 years is a long time on a not so "new model".
And I will order the filters.
Much appreciated,
S

Sharks,

I hate to say it, but I don't like the sound of this guy. I really hate sales tactics that say "$99.00 now, $150.00 later".

Extended warranty? I'm not sure on that one. I never bought one. Like RR said, after 2 years with the cam, I'm itching for a new one. If I had the cash, I'd upgrade.

If you do decide to get it, read it over thoroughly first - exactly what it covers.

As far as ..

I use the Crystal Optics filter set for Nikon. It comes with UV, Polarizing, and Flourescent filters. Even though the set for the 5700 is much more expensive than it was for the 995 ($39.00), you can get it

>>here<< for $115.95.
