Re: Need donut coral advice

My experience is they do better with low light/flow but can adjust to more intense lighting if properly acclimated. Some of these corals are found in very deep water and sudden exposure to intense light will lead to zooxanthellae expulsion and severe tissue recession if your not careful.

Re: Need donut coral advice

I've noticed that some of the tentacles and the area around the mouth are bleaching. I noticed this when I moved it from a very flat rock ledge to the sand. It seemed to be getting worse on the sand so I moved him back up on the ledge. It is possible that a galaxia might have hit him with some sweepers, so I moved the galaxia far away. I dunno though, he just ain't looking so good. I am going to do a WC today and will post my water params and a pic to see what people think. thank you.

The sand has nothing to do with the problem IMHO.

Wise move as the sweeper tentacles from the Galaxea can extend quite far and pack a powerful sting.

My suggestion would be to shade him from direct light and see how it does.

Re: Need donut coral advice

Thanks for the info Cheeks. The ledge is higher up in the tank. I moved him down to the sand, and soon thereafter discovered the problem. I then put him back up on the ledge, which gets more light. Yesterday I moved him again back to the bottom.

One of then problems in my tank is that I have a hard time finding spots that don't have a moderate to high flow. I could unplug some powerheads, but I have some corals that seem to be doing really well with the higher flow, so I haven't.

Re: Need donut coral advice

Well, my donut is not doing well. I posted a month ago or so that the skele broke through. I superglued the area, and that did seem to help and the area did heal up. However he has steadily gone downhill. Many of his feeder tentacles have turned white. I've decided my tank is just too bright and too strong current for him. I moved him to the fuge this morning.

Can someone please explain the process for a dip? I've never done a coral dip. I do have reef iodine on hand. Dosing strength, procedure, and length of time would be helpful. I'd like to try a dip before he is beyond any hope. Thanks.
