Lighting Advice

Okay, so i am thinking about gettinga bigger tank......I have a 120 gal 72" long empty tank in the garage EMPTY!

I am looking at lighting options for this tank. I really like the clean crisp look that some of the halide fixtures provide - specifically i was looking at this fixture

Current USA 72 inch Outer Orbit 3x150w 10K HQI-MH w/ 8x39W T5 HO & 24 Lunar Lights (72in )

3 150 watt hqi
and 8 54 watt t5 ho with individual reflectors.

Clams and sps are in the future - i am just getting ideas going for the equipment.

Does anyone use this light or have any thoughts on this?

Re: Lighting Advice

Go with something with 250's if you want clams... I have 175's on my 125g right now, and it is not enough... Have to keep the SPS way up high..

Re: Lighting Advice

Agreed if you go HQI 250's other than that the T5's do very well also

Re: Lighting Advice

If you're going to grow SPS and other light-intensive stock, go with the 250W HQI version (http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewIt...~CU01079.html). It's only $185 more and will give you more light down deeper into the water column.

That is a good deal... but you may feel constrained in the long run.

You'd probably be limited to light-needy SPS in the top 1/2 of the water column, though, because of light penetration. And I'd put the future clam in the top 1/3 to 2/3 or so - maybe a Tridacna maxima or T. crocea in the top third or T. squamosa, gigas, or derasa down a little lower.
