| Torch coral | Pics of New Shrooms & Zoanthids Hello! Yesterday I made my first reef purchase!! I have been FOWLR until now! Woohooo!! Here are some pics. I think my mushrooms are of the genus Actinodiscus. The one on the left I think is Actinodiscus Coeruleus (metalic blue) and the one on the right Actinodiscus Cardinalis (red). I basd this on my book: Corals by Eric Borneman. There are nice big pictures in there. ![]() ![]() The zoanthids are orage-ish and I believe of the Protopalythoa since they are solatary and not matted. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Also, two of the three arent opening as much as the other one. I think maybe there is too much flow in that area. i dont think its the light because they were totaly open at the LFS under MH's and I have PC's so if anything they should open more to get more light. So I think its the current that is right there and I may attempt a move to the opposite side of the tank and see what happens...

| Torch coral | Re: Pics of New Shrooms & Zoanthids Yeah, I read that the next day in my coral book! I did grab that rock with my hand to put it in the tank from the bag and I also touched a closed polyp too...but I never felt any symptoms, so I got lucky. Nasty little buggers huh?!

| Reef Lobster | Re: Pics of New Shrooms & Zoanthids CMG, Scott is right about the paly's, you will need to do some reading up on them and become aware of their toxic nature. You don't want them squirting any juice in your eye. Rubber gloves and a some eye protection is highly recommended! You have a nice rock there! Good hearty specimens to start off with. Shrooms don't like a lot of flow and will tend to expel their water and become smaller. High current will make them twist and detach from the rock, leaving a nub behind. The top will find a place to land and will continue to grow and the nub will form a new mushroom top. My biggest shroom is about 4.5" in diameter. I keep this one in a low flow area. I want to see just how big it will get. I have both of the ones you showed in your first photo. You have the species correct (Actinodiscus) and they are known as Discosoma Coeruleus (blue) and Discosoma ferrugatus (red). Heres a photo of the Actinodiscus Cardinalis (red). ![]() They Will all open up real nice after a couple days! The Coeruleus is a walker and likes a lot of room to move about. As he moves it will leave babies behind. The ferrugatus don't walk, mine get so big they twist off in a self propagating manner. The Cardinalis is a frag rock that I have not had for very long and I have not yet examined their behavior. |

| Torch coral | Re: Pics of New Shrooms & Zoanthids Wow cool info thanks!! Those red ones are very pretty. I went to the fish store twice today! haha. I love all the very colorful stuff but that seems to cost the most. I have been looking into craigslist for local frags but none yet. I would rather not deal with shipping yet. Not to mention the ones I have found that arent local are priced per polyp and its seems expensive to me but maybe thats because they will end up spreading?? I am also already looking into splitting the shrooms myslef. Seems easy enough. Perhaps during the summer after the semster is over and I have some more time and patience.
