Tree type coral Id?

Ok I can't remember what this coral is for the LIFE of me. They told us at LFS and even gave some background but we got so many new "critters" I can't remember what this one is.

and here's another shot...

And ideas? I'm hoping if I see/hear it I'll be able to say "Yeah that's it!" but I make no promises

Help meeeeeeee

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Tree type coral Id?

Ok now that I know what I'm dealing with I have some questions.... I don't know if it's better to post here or in Julie's tank thread...

This coral is also known as a "Lace" coral. It's suggested that it be placed in low-light area including cliffs & overhangs. This is in Julie's 6g Nano Cube with only has an 18w 50/50 bulb in it. Not much light but for the size & depth of the tank it does really good. My question is does it "Need" to be in shade? It's not photosynthetic at all so why would it matter?

Also should I add some Cyclopeeze at night after lights out (like I did with Sun-Corals) or does that matter?

Just wondering

I found several pics over the net and when I started looking under a common name I found (Lace) I found a ton of pics that do look like it. I think we're on the right track here

Re: Tree type coral Id?

Sorry, I should have included the common name, but keep in mind the name lace coral is also shared with a few other corals and gorgs.
These are relatively hardy fast growing corals that will take over a tank if I remember correctly. I'm sorry I don't have much other input, I've never personally kept one.

Re: Tree type coral Id?

A little info, I believe their care is similar to fire corals as well, but don't take my word for it so....
Lace Coral info from Fenner:
Sylasterina

for fire coral info:
Milleporina

Re: Tree type coral Id?

This coral is nearly impossible to keep, you should try feeding it phytoplankton the cyclops is too large for it but should be able to get a hold of the phyto.

Re: Tree type coral Id?

Hello Al,

I does not know should I congratulate? She is simply wonderful, but also one of the most sensitive corals I know. She stands no light, needs shady to dark place in the aquarium with a lot of current, so that she does not become covered from algae. She must be fed daily. However, Cyclops is absolutely inexpedient (to large). She needs liquid food as for example UltraMin S - Vitamins - Special Coral Food , together with very fine zooplankton.

I know, by the way, none this coral longer than 3 - 4 months has maintained, to find the right food is simply too complicated. Unfortunately, the fine zooplankton as required we are yet not able to breed.

I would have written something nicer to you with pleasure, unfortunately, it is as described above. Nevertheless, I wish you a lot of success.
