Blueberry Gorgonian Issues...

I bought this blueberry about 3 weeks ago. When I first put it into the tank it responded immediately and opened all of its polyps all day for a few days straight. Since then they have been closed. I thought it might have been a flow issue, so after observing it for a few days, I decided to relocate it to a different area in the tank. Still no major reactions. It does however, open when I put cyclopees into the tank. I feed the tank every other day, and after it feeds it closes. So in theory it opens every other day. Is this OK, or should I be doing something else?

I know the Blueberry is in fact the hardest Gorg to keep, but I would like it to stay around a bit longer...LOL. Here are my params in case they are needed to give me a good hypothesis.

Temp 77
PH 8.1
Nitrite 0.3
Ammonia 0
Ca 460ppm

Re: Blueberry Gorgonian Issues...

Maybe the CA is a little too high?
Just a wild shot in the dark? I'm not expert, I'm learning more everyday.

I think natural sea water has about 400 - 425 ppm

Re: Blueberry Gorgonian Issues...

How old is this tank? You shouldn't have nitrite in an established system.
That would be my first concern.

Re: Blueberry Gorgonian Issues...

calc is fine... but your nitrites should be 0.0... what is your nitrate level? salinity? and it seems the temp could stand to go up a degree? maybe? im not 100% on that....

where is the gorg? do you have it placed on a rock? or sticking out of the sand? they need to be fed directly too...non photosynthetic..

just trying to think of anything that can be off...

Re: Blueberry Gorgonian Issues...

bluebells are indeed the hardest gorg to keep,,,and this is among the hard to keep non-photo gorg group. they require low light, soft flow and tons of food cyclopeeze and smaller.

this is one of the "should be banned" species we talked about in another thread.

Wow! This is too close to home on another thread! I agree Dave.
Until there are some laws invented on the educating before sales to the public, were going to keep seeing post like this.

Re: Blueberry Gorgonian Issues...

I agree Frankie, and its even harder to be properly educated when the LFS thats selling them barley knows more than the consumer!

The nitrite test I am using is a Tetra... So in fact that reading is < 0.03. Which most likely means 0. I haven't gotten around to getting a Salifert nitrite test kit yet. Salinity is a bit high... 1.025
