New coral frags picked up today

ok so i was at the lfs today and i was waiting in-line and this guy was all like oh i need this so i said screw it ima gonna look around...yeah thats the best idea...i found a cpl of frags one was a green star polyp and the other was a frogspawn
here are some pics i think i got good placement on them for my tank i have only roughly 2watts per gallon but it is pc lightning which after all the research i've done on pc's they actually put out roughly if i had vho lightning what would be 4watts per gallon.
Green star Polyps....and bugger u can see another what im guessing is a bistle worm that makes number two bah i hope they're reef safe

and the frogspawn head

then u can see the frawspawn is in the upper right corner and the star polyps are wraped on the peice of tonga rock on the bottom just below the mushrooms

No, yours should stay that color from now on. I have one that same color that is HUGE!! About the size of a basketball. I promise. It started from a small frag with 3 heads on it from what I remember.

Re: New coral frags picked up today

yeah im glad its not going to change..i got a question tho as far as location i only have 110W of PC lightning which i've been told is rated roughly around a 200-220W of VHO lightning i have the frogspawn at the top of the tank as to make sure it does absorb the most amount of light...i think this will be fine i kind of want to move it down a little bit though...and its unfortinitally only onehead big but itsa already starting to flourish a bit(im noticing tips are starting to form on the tenticles) i read that they don't really need anything other then chemicals but could benifit from feeding of brine shrimp, do u have any recomendations?

The FrogSpawn will do fine under your lighting but I think you've been slightly mis-informed. PC don't equate to 2x VHO or HO's. They are decent lights ( I run them as well) but they are considered medium lights at best.

What type of lights was the FrogSpawn under at the LFS? You want to place it somewhere in the tank that most likely represents that situation. If it was under dim/old lights at your LFS and your lights are newer/brighter you may want to start it a little lower so it can get acclimated and then move it up or down depending on how it "acts". FrogSpawn is one of if not THE favorite coral of mine. Just keep in mind it does have a sting and it will sting and harm/kill neighboring corals if it can reach them. Many times when another coral is "sensed" near it, it will send out what's called "Sweeper" tentacles that reach considerably longer than the ones you normally see and sting the neighbor corals. I have a Closed Brain with dark black dead spots where I under-estimated the reach of my FrogSpawn.

Also a word of caution about your GSPs. Make sure you're placing them on a rock that's not you PRIZED show piece. Once these things get settled in they can take off like WEEDS and are tough to control. I always try to keep them on their own rock and NOT my "Prize Rock" so that I can remove it if needed. In one of my tanks I did NOT do this and it's a CONSTANT battle to keep the tiny "flowers" pulled by tweezers otherwise they will out compete my prized Zoas and cause them to die back. I literally have to go into my tank EVERY couple of days with TWEEZERS and yank a GSP polyp here and there or they over run my Zoas.

Keep those tips in mind and I think you'll thoroughly enjoy your new corals.

You don't need to feed them anything. A good majority of their food comes from Photosynthesis (which is why you worry about which lights you have) and the rest comes from what they catch suspended in the water column. Be very careful about trying to feed your corals at least for now. It's VERY easy to over feed and bring your water quality WAY down. Also Brine Shrimp have little to NO nutritional value. It's very similar to Pop-Corn to us. It tastes good but doesn't really add much to our diet. That doesn't mean I DON'T eat pop-corn though.

Some people DO spot feed their FrogSpawn and I have tried. I've had FrogSpawn almost a year now and have YET to get any of them to take food.

Re: New coral frags picked up today

yeah well thats why i put the GSP on the peice of tonga rock thats just sitting on front creating a cave i think it would actually look really cool to have a curved peice of GSP basically in the end, yeah i read that information on the corals from liveaquaria.com..and they were sitting under 2VHO's one attenic and one not..now another question about lightning cuz i read in this reef book about starting up a tank that a 55wPC bulb is rated higher than a 110VHO, but i only have 110W worth of lightning i have an old NO 48" strip light once i start my refugeium and get everything to stop splattering water i was thinkn of putting on a attenic blue lamp on there to atleast take my wattage up to 150W total...now when i worry about lighning i just look at total wattage right? i don't have much right now which is why im not really worried about the lightning to much untill i have the time and money to get a new setup.
