fragging devils hand

I've seen SPS fragging but have never witnessed or done soft coral fragging. I have a friend I would like to give some of my devils hand to. Do I just "lop off one of the "fingers" and rubberband it to a plug? Thanks guys and gals!

Re: fragging devils hand

Yup, just lop it off. Use either a sharp scalpel, razor blade or pair of scissors.

To attach you can do it a few ways:

Rubber band it to a rock
Loosely rubber band it between to small pieces of rock
Use some thread and a needle to sew it to a rock
Just place it in a small container full of rubble and let it be
Or you can try a little dab of super glue to attach it to the rock. I have used this with kenyas and toadstools without trouble but the slimier leathers just slide off the glue

Re: fragging devils hand

Could you post some before and after pics?
I've got a large devils hand, and was thinking about fragging it... but not if it will end up looking all chewed up.

Thanks.

Re: fragging devils hand

Fraggin is the easy part, its the attaching that is tricky with leathers.

Re: fragging devils hand

What method do you use?

Re: fragging devils hand

Depending on the type of leather I use either super glue (kenya trees, toadstool, lobophytons) or for the slimier leathers, (sinularia, nepthea, xenia) lately I have been using the small 4" plastic zip ties.

Re: fragging devils hand

Are you using the zip ties to loop around the coral and the rock?

I've trying with nepthias with limited results. They resist any kind of glueing, but putting in a bowl of rubble seems to be working well.

Re: fragging devils hand

Yup, pierce the coral with the zip tie and then wrap it around the rock. May have to use more than one tie depending on the size of the rock.

You can see here fro when I fragged my nepthea last time.

Re: fragging devils hand

I knew you guys would want before and afters. I thought of it after though. I only snipped one finger off and couldn't even tell anything was missing. The coral didn't even seem to mind, no pouting or anything. I used a needle and thread and sewed through the flesh and tied it to a piece of cats paw coral skeleton. I'll try and get a pic tomorrow of the "missing finger" and the hand it came from.

Re: fragging devils hand

Once you lop off the ears of a leather coral, and attach it to a piece of LR, how long before it actually begins to grow a new stem? I understand that it may take a few days just to reattach to the LR but how long does a new stem take to grow?

Thx
John
