Looks to just be where the polyps are retracted. Mine looks like that when the polyps are pulled in. Watch it for a few days and see if it changes.

ok... i only ask because this is the first i have seen them... usually when the polyps are retracted it looks real smooth...i was just curious if that was normal for them to look black.. lol... thanks! ill keep watching!

I've noticed my devils hand do that from time to time.
That's what I thought it was, retracted polyps.

The culprit is probably that Percula clown. Chances are it tried to nest in it as though it were an anemone. Annoying little buggers at times...
