Proper ID/Info needed on this piece....

Picked it up for about $15 the other day, the LFS guy said its like a carnation, but these ARE photosynthetic. I never really tried keeping carnations in the past, so therefore I know NOTHING about them...except for that they were moderate to take care of. Im looking for a name and some more info on this nice small piece. Thanks.....

IT looks a bit different from the carnation I had. Notice I said had. They are notoriously difficult to keep.
I hope you have better luck than I did.

Re: Proper ID/Info needed on this piece....

If it is photosynthetic then it may be Neospongodes
(NEE-oh-spung-OH-deez) or the Fiji variety of Stereonephthya(STEH-ree-o-NEF-thee-yuh)
I couldn't find much husbandry info on either of them though. Maybe you will have better luck. Being photsynthetic it may be easier to care for than the nonphotosynthetic varieties, ..I hope so! Good Luck!

Re: Proper ID/Info needed on this piece....

Can the polyps fully retract when bothered?

My guesses would be Nephthea sp., Litophyton sp., or Lemnalia sp.
Possibly Scleronephthya sp. if the polyps retract however I think Scleronephthya sp. only has polyps on the branches.

Re: Proper ID/Info needed on this piece....

looks like a dendronephthya carnation or perhaps Scleronephthya. both very hard to keep, need a constant supply of food.

the LFS guy says its like a carnation but you say they are photosynthetic, if the LFS guy can not give an id how do you know its photosynthetic?

I said that the LFS guy said it was photosynthetic....and the polyps do retract when bothered, right when my white lights go out, it almost completely retracts into a mini tree...

ok, so without knowing the ID, what makes him think its photosynthetic?

Looks for me like Dead man's fingers ore Alcyonium acaule maybe a Alcyonium coralloides ore a Alcyonium glomeratum

Dendronephtya, Scleronephthya and Neptophylias have almost exclusively a bright to white lime skeleton and colored polyps. With the animal shown is however the lime skeleton colored and the polyps white and/or in a bright color.

I do not know any soft coral begin with a N in the latin name and I think I know quite well the latin names of our corals.
