Pavona Info

I just picked up this coral last week. I believe it is a pink pavona. From what I read it indicated low tank placement with medium flow. (I have 4 individual T5 reflectors).

I actually broke 1/3 off when putting into the tank. I was using my new coralife gloves (I don't like these --- too thick, could not judge my hand squeezing pressure).

Does anyone have any additional information on this coral related to placement, feeding, flow, etc? Should I glue it to a live rock? My crabs and snails have knocked it down twice already.

Re: Pavona Info

Doesn't look like any kind of Pavona to me, it looks like a Turbinaria (aka Pagoda) to me. I could be wrong but I have never seen any Pavona like that, and I have some Pavona. Here are some Pagoda corals:

Re: Pavona Info

Pretty sure it is Pavona maldivensis or related species.

I would glue it to the rock only if you are having problems with it staying in place. I have found it to be very hardy, keeps color very well, but fairly slow growing regardless of light and flow.'
Just my experience

Re: Pavona Info

I actually saw a coral almost identical to that at a local lfs and was wondering what it was. Love the fluorescence of those polyps.

You don't happen to live around Orlando do u?

Re: Pavona Info

OK, I guess I will leave it where it is now, lower in the tank with medium flow.

Yes this was bought in Orlando at SITC along with some cool green clove polyps that look like palm trees.

Re: Pavona Info

Yup, these guys are super radioactive fluorescent
That orange just glows!
I had a specimen that appeared branching but I guess it was just a small columnar section. They will growing in horizontal or encrusting plates as well:

The colors may react better if the coral is under more intense lighting. I wouldn't call them a "strong light" needing coral, but medium to high light should be good and will result in the best colors most of the time. In a T5 lit tank, probably the higher the better. don't be surprised if it loses color intensity or shift brown for a little while.

I would call them a moderately aggressive coral. Definitely not as aggressive as a hydnophora or some LPS species. A buffer area of a few inches around it will keep things happy and allow for growth.
Keep your eyes out for green varieties also. They are just as intense in color.

Re: Pavona Info

To be hoenst I dunno. I've had bad luck with those I got a few frags and they turned ugly in my tanks. Never could figure out lots of light, little light, or even how aggressive they were.
I gave all mine away
I seemed to get contradicting info on those, everything from: "mine is 8 inches directly under a 250 watt metal halide bulb and is bright green," all the way to, "mine is under a rock under my sump under my rock cooking vats covered in a black garbage bag and is the brightest green you've ever seen..."
Ok, maybe I was stretching with the second one, but you get the idea
