Duncanopsammia axifuga

I'm the proud owner of a happy Duncan coral. I read these should be fed meaty foods.

I'm looking for any ones experience in what types of foods, on what interval.

Also, does each head need to eat or will they share the wealth?

Drew

Re: Duncanopsammia axifuga

I just got one about two weeks ago and they are pigs! I feed mine about every three days and it seems to be doing great. I have been feeding it Mysis and some chopped up Krill. I have also noticed that it doesn't seem to have any problems getting pods that wonder too close either, and it will munch on any of the molts from pods that may be floating by. I have read that the main benefit from feeding it often is that they will grow faster.

Re: Duncanopsammia axifuga

As for feeding each head I would think that it would be beneficial, but mine is only one head so I don't know for sure.

Re: Duncanopsammia axifuga

I( have never had one, but plan on getting one. The research that I have done leads me to believe that each head need to be fed individually. These corals feed similarly to sun corals, but have the ability to use photosynthesis as well. Chopped silversides, mysis shrimp, larger food particles, as these will gain a faster feeding response.

Hi Drew,

Duncanopsammia axifuga is a little "beauty" in any aquarium. She belongs to the family Dendrophylliidae and shows big resemblances to the Tubastrea. The difference is enclosed in the fact that this coral owns Zooxanthellen. However, she cannot live exclusively on the Zooxanthellen and must be fed regularly. The advantage compared with the Tubastrea corals is that during the day the polyps of the Duncanopsammia are expanded. The polyps of the coral should be washed around by a strong current so that nothing can deposit on her. I feed them every 3 - 4 days with baby Mysis and Artemia.

I am quite sure not an encyclopedia of reef Melanie, but in more than 20 years something gathers in knowledge. If you have maintained once more than 20 years of reef aquariums you can transmit certainly also this knowledge.

Re: Duncanopsammia axifuga

My Duncan has been tricky. He grew 2 new heads very quickly, but then his tentacle got kinda long and stringy. I have been feeding him, and I tried him in a few different spots. He doesn't look like he is on his way out, but I know he should be fuller.
